Job Description

  • Working as part of the Privacy, Product and Technology team, provide compliance guidance and practical, actionable solutions to business owners to ensure that regulatory and contractual obligations are met with respect to data protection, export controls, trade sanctions, and cybersecurity.
  • Assist in developing playbooks, processes, and policies associated with trade sanctions, export controls, and cybersecurity regulation; assist with litigation as needed.
  • Support, maintain and implement trade compliance-related notices, policies, guidelines, and other process documentation, ensuring content is up to date and relevant.
  • Analyze, interpret, and apply U.S. export control laws and regulations; handle restricted-party screening results and determine when/if to lift blocked orders.
  • Assist with proactive management of compliance risks associated with export controls, trade sanctions, and cybersecurity.
  • Use understanding of broader legal, regulatory, and market risks and trends to influence and set priorities, proactively assessing tasks, projects and strategic objectives based on the evolving landscape.
  • Support other attorneys negotiating, and directly negotiate as necessary, cybersecurity-related terms in commercial agreements with customers and vendors; advise on other regulatory  concerns in connection with onboarding and managing vendors and other third parties.

Candidate preferred to live in the following areas: Greater Boston, New York City, Washington, DC

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: 

  • 5+ years of working experience as a lawyer with at least 2 years in cybersecurity.
  • J.D. from an accredited law school; admitted to practice and in good standing in the applicable state.  Will consider attorneys with JD-equivalent degrees from European universities if the candidate has cybersecurity or trade compliance experience at a law firm, US Federal agency (Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency), EU commission, ECSO, ENISA, or UK Cyber Security Council.

Preferred Requirements: 

  • Comfortable in a rapidly scaling and changing environment; able to perform under pressure and willingness to take on new responsibilities.  
  • Eagerness to stay current on the global national security, trade compliance, and cybersecurity landscape and provide regular, succinct updates concerning the evolving landscape.
  • Uses a client-centric, pragmatic, informed approach to provide sound business advice as well as reliable legal counsel. 
  • Comfortable working as part of a team both within legal and with business partners.
  • Curiosity and demonstrated interest in and understanding of software and cloud technologies; experience with encryption, AppSec, and other security technologies is a plus.
  • Comfortable with cybertechnology technology.  Undergraduate degree in computer science or software engineering or software development experience or other “on the job” experience with technology preferred.
  • Experience working in a global technology company or law firm with an international practice; experience in a relevant U.S. Federal or EU regulatory agency is a plus.  
  • Candidates must have knowledge of and familiarity with data protection laws including FISMA, FTC Act, GDPR, NIS2, CCPA/CPRA; experience trade sanctions or US national security laws is a plus.
  • A problem solver who thoughtfully and effectively communicates guidance and makes it actionable.
  • Fluent written and verbal English language skills required, fluency or knowledge of other EU languages a plus, especially German or French.
  • Brings humility and curiosity to interactions; enjoys working in a team.
  • Cybersecurity or trade compliance certifications is a plus (but not required).
