About the role

Description

The Knox College Department of Art and Art History invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment as Assistant or Associate Professor of Art to begin September 1, 2025. We seek applications from candidates specializing in sculpture and ceramics, who will serve as the department’s primary instructor in those areas.

Knox College, established in 1837, is an independent, selective liberal arts institution with a mission of access, a diverse student body, and a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching. We are particularly interested in creative, energetic teachers of undergraduate students who can contribute to Knox College’s considerable diversity and reflect that diversity in their teaching, mentoring, and creative work and research. With over 35% of the student body identifying as U.S. students of color and more than 20% international students, the College seeks courses appealing and welcoming to all of Knox’s students.

The department is particularly interested in artists who bring a unique contemporary perspective to their area and are interested in bridging digital technologies with traditional mediums. Required skills include wheel-throwing and sculptural applications of clay, kiln firing (gas and electric), glaze and clay preparation, general knowledge of ceramics equipment, and general knowledge of woodworking and metalworking practices and equipment. Responsibilities include maintaining shop spaces, ceramics, and sculpture studios. Candidate portfolios should provide evidence of a range of material practices.

The position involves a six-course teaching load (two courses in each of three 10-week terms) that includes introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses within the candidate’s area of expertise that contribute to the general liberal arts curriculum. The primary teaching load consists of introductory- and intermediate-level courses in sculpture and ceramics. In addition to departmental teaching duties, Art and Art History faculty also contribute to teaching the College’s First-Year Preceptorial program.

The candidate must have enthusiasm and dedication for foundation-level teaching. Regardless of media, introductory courses should establish a foundation of visual and technical literacy while also addressing the college's larger general education learning goals. All studio art faculty also contribute to teaching and overseeing advanced interdisciplinary workshops, so the ability to give critical feedback to students working in various media is vital to the success of our program. The ideal candidate will have over three years of full-time teaching experience.

Knox College provides a competitive salary and a strong benefits package, including health, dental, vision, life insurance, and access to a retirement plan; a tuition remission benefit is available after a two-year waiting period. Additional information can be found on our Human Resources webpage at: https://www.knox.edu/offices/human-resources/employee-benefits-and-forms.
