Description

SUMMARY

Coordinates and completes fieldwork in support of environmental investigations. Completes project data analysis and prepares project reports. Research, field inspections and report preparation to support the completion of Phase I and II environmental assessments, and other related projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

The implementation of project scopes of work related to environmental investigations. These scopes may include Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, soil investigations, ground water investigations, soil vapor surveys, Underground Storage Tank (UST) closures, remediation system monitoring and maintenance, asbestos and/or lead paint sampling. The project scientist is expected to take the scope of work for each project and coordinate drilling, laboratory and whatever subcontractors are required for a given project.

After completion of the field component of a project, the Project Scientist is expected to tabulate analytical data, discuss the implications with the Project Manager, and begin to prepare the project report. Report preparation will be completed under the supervision of the Project Manager.

Knowledge of all applicable environmental regulations for jurisdiction project is situated in, knowledge of site geology, soils, and hydrogeology.

Knowledge of applicable ASTM Standards for transaction screens, Phase I assessments, Phase II investigations and NEPA screening.

Understanding of regulatory requirements and limitations to apply during data analysis.

General knowledge of bidding process, understanding of project specifications.

Preparation of report elements under the supervision of Project Manager.

Fieldwork completed in conformity with client requirements and contract scope and normal environmental standards under direction of Project Manager.

Field inspections and daily reports.

Test pit observations.

Frequent travel to other company offices or project sites to fulfill workload demands may be necessary.

Speed of task preparation and progression to more complex tasks and mastery of these duties and responsibilities should improve with experience level at this position, along with the ability to identify and add essential elements necessary for completion of the product with lessening of supervisor input as experience level increases.

Writing skills and phone/e-mail skills to obtain data should progress. Interaction with client or agency contacts should increase. Project Scientist shall develop skills necessary to scope projects and prepare basic cost proposals.

Provide positive, encouraging environment consistent with employee ownership.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

BS in Geology, Environmental Science/Engineering, or related field. 2+ years of experience in Environmental Science/Engineering, Geology or related field. Proficiency in use of current BL platforms of Word and Excel. Knowledge of GIS applications is also preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as regulations, ordinances, application forms, technical plans, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to staff and superiors, clients, regulatory agency staff and outside technical personnel.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Ability to calculate proportions, interpolations, percentages, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations. Ability to perform tasks in a logical, organized manner and sequence.
