POSITION TITLE: Academic Coach for Labry School of Science, Technology, and Business
NUMBER OF POSITIONS: One

SUPERVISOR: Executive Director of Student Support
GENERAL JOB FUNCTION
To serve as an Academic Advisor to Cumberland’s highest risk incoming freshmen. Help undergraduate students navigate CU systems. Teach at least two sections of Foundations of Scholarship and Learning (FSL) during fall semester and additional classes (as needed) during spring semester.
STANDARD EXPECTATIONS
Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- To serve as Academic Advisor to highest risk students within the Labry School of Science, Technology and Business.
- Help undergraduate students navigate CU systems.
- Attending all new student registration days.
- Know when, where, and how to refer students to offices including, but not limited to Tutoring and Writing Center, mental health/Counseling Center, Disability Services, Financial Aid, Business, or Registrar’s Offices, Retention and TN Promise Support, Career Services & Internships, Health Services, Library, etc.
- Monitor student attendance each week and communicate with at-risk students who have high absences.
- Maintain regular communication with assigned students at key points in the semester to include reminders about important dates, upcoming events, and processes to be followed.
- Provide Add/Drop/Registration assistance for students in their academic area when assigned academic advisors are unavailable. This will happen during school break times.
- Meet with early and midterm alert students to discuss study skills, academic resources, and strategies to finish the semester successfully.
- Track intervention results from one-on-one meetings, as well as contact with academic advisors and athletic coaches.
- Teach as an instructor and faculty member within Academic Affairs teaching one or more sections of Foundations of Scholarship and Learning, the freshman first year experience, or other courses as credentialing allows.
- Protect the confidentiality of information by preventing the unauthorized release, both verbally and/or in writing, of student and university data.
- Additional duties/tasks may be assigned and/or requested by the Executive Director of Student Support, Vice President of Enrollment Services, or the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs.
- EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required: Master’s Degree in any discipline required.
Preferred: Previous work experience in student retention, especially in academic advising or student success.
