Incumbent may be required to work stand-by on rotational basis and report to work on a callback basis as needed within a designated time frame. Standby assignment is at the discretion of the Division Head.

What You’ll Do

The Utilities Mechanic performs a variety of skilled mechanical maintenance, repair, and installation duties on Ventura Water’s treatment, pumping, and distribution systems. This includes working on pumps, motors, valves, compressors, hydraulic systems, and other equipment essential to delivering quality water to the community.

Depending on experience, this team member will act in an entry-level or journey capacity, maintaining mechanical equipment related to wastewater facilities. This position will be responsible for:

  • Performing preventive and corrective maintenance on mechanical equipment at wells, booster stations, treatment facilities, and reservoirs.

  • Installing, maintaining, and repairing pumps, valves, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and related components.

  • Troubleshooting equipment failures, diagnosing issues, and repairing or replacing defective parts.

  • Conducting equipment performance tests using gauges and meters to ensure efficiency and reliability.

  • Performing fabrication and welding work to repair and modify parts or equipment.

  • Performing pipefitting tasks on potable water piping systems.

  • Operating motorized equipment such as cranes, hoists, and aerial lifts in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Maintaining accurate maintenance logs and entering data into computerized maintenance management systems.

  • Adhering to all safety procedures and regulations, including lockout/tagout and confined space requirements.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Utilities Mechanic I - This is the sub-journey level classification of the flexibly allocated series in which incumbents are approaching journey level. This class performs the more routine semiskilled to skilled mechanical maintenance duties, including preventative maintenance and repair on plant equipment and facilities, and may occasionally assist in routine electrical maintenance work.

Utilities Mechanic II - This is the full journey level classification in this flexibly allocated series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Utilities Mechanic Worker I by the independent performance of the full range of skilled mechanical maintenance, repair and installation activities, and frequently assists Electrical-Mechanical Maintenance Workers in routine electrical maintenance work. This classification is distinguished from the Electrical-Mechanical Maintenance Worker by the latter's responsibility for performing the full range of skilled electrical work.
