Assistant Director, Doctoring (MD or DO), Undergraduate Medical Education (Phoenix) Posting Number req26565 Department COM Phx Ugrd Medical Education Department Website Link College of Medicine-Phoenix Medical Sub-Speciality Location Greater Phoenix Area Address 475 N. 5th St., Phoenix, AZ 85004 USA Position Highlights The Doctoring Program seeks a part-time assistant director, Doctoring to assist with the execution of the year 1 & 2 course, year 4 OSCE and OSTE; assist in the development of cases driven by learning objectives; participate in core teaching of patient centered interviewing, physical exam, written and oral presentation and clinical reasoning skills; assist in the evaluation of the pre-clinical students within a competency focused framework; assist in the implementation of EPA’s in the pre-clinical environment; initiate scholarly research; assist in standardize patient (SP) and faculty training; and assist in overall course evaluation and Curriculum evaluation. This position will report to the director of the Doctoring Curriculum and work closely with the associate specialist and other community physicians who participate in this program.

The Center for Clinical Skills and Assessment teaches and assesses interviewing, physical exam, communication, interpersonal and critical-thinking skills to 1st- and/or 2nd-year College of Medicine – Phoenix medical students in a structured setting using SPs. The Center for Clinical Skills and Assessment is outfitted with video monitoring equipment in each of the 30 exam rooms. The space is equipped with LearningSpace, a web-based technology, which allows faculty and staff to set up, control and record the encounters, and also allows faculty and students to review the encounters on any computer with an internet connection. Each room is equipped with all relevant clinical tools as well as a desktop computer, with a second desktop computer just outside the door, for student data entry. In the control room, faculty observe and score the SP Encounter. This is followed by live faculty and SP feedback to the student. SOAP notes are entered by the students into LearningSpace and faculty scores provide further feedback. Additional teaching modules include critical thinking, PE skills, SOAP note dissections and Oral Presentation.

During each of the blocks there is a concentration on a specific group of organ systems except in the first block when a cursory introduction to medical interviewing and the physical examination is presented. Therefore, the interview and physical exam elements emphasized are focused on those organ systems. For example, during the Neurological Science (NS) Block, the mental status and neurological focus history and examination is taught.

The first year Doctoring Course has been divided into the system blocks of the curriculum:

• Block 1: Molecular Basis and Life and Disease (MBLD)
• Block 2: Musculoskeletal and Nervous System 1 (MSNS 1)
• Block 3: Nervous System 2 (NS 2)
• Block 4 Cardiovascular Hematology (CV-Heme)
• Block 5: Pulmonary Renal Acid Base (PRAB)

The second year Doctoring Course has been compressed into 2 blocks:

• Block 1: Gastrointestinal, Metabolism, Diabetes, Nutrition Science (GIMDN)
• Block 2: Reproduction, Endocrine, Behavior Life span (REBLS)

The students will alternate weekly between a continuing longitudinal clinical experience (CCE) and this course. The class of 145+ students has been divided into thirds with 1/3 of the class (48-49 students) attending class on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoon from 1:00-5:00 pm. Each of these groups is further divided into cohorts of three students each and assigned to a physician coach. Coaching assignments rotate each semester. Faculty members are present at each session and are responsible for three students. Students and faculty are required to prepare for each session by completing required reading and viewing of video of the portions of the physical exam that will be practiced at that particular session. Additionally, there might be a need for additional one-on-one skill building activities with students as needed.

The successful candidate will fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member in an appropriate department, actively participate in teaching and/or scholarly work, and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of assistant professor.

The successful candidate will meet the requirements of a career track faculty according to the College and University guidelines. This career-track appointment is not eligible for tenure.
