Description
The Clinical Technician I supports the University of Iowa Health Care Department of Neurology by independently monitoring patients in the adult and pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) via digital electroencephalogram (EEG) equipment and audiovisual (AV) equipment.
This position is responsible for the initiating and terminating EMU studies, as well as ensuring studies are recorded and maintaining the quality of the recordings. The Clinical Tech identifies clinical and electrographic events during the studies and responds appropriately, notifying personnel as needed.
Position Responsibilities:
- Prepares area and materials for patient testing in the adult and pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit(EMU)
- Performs routine technical measurements using specialized medical equipment (EEG/AV) to determine changing conditions of a patient
- Records EMU studies with audiovisual and EEG equipment, ensures quality of recordings, and maintains information obtained during recordings to facilitate interpretation of the data and meet established equipment review guidelines/protocols.
- Identifies clinical and electrographic events and responds appropriately
- Distributes information to appropriate areas and personnel
- Assists with collecting equipment/electrodes upon patient discharge
- Maintains event log for each patient
- Performs routine maintenance of equipment to ensure operational condition at all times
- Troubleshoots EEG/AV equipment and electrodes as necessary
- Assists in training new personnel to operate and maintain EEG/AV equipment
- Assembles emergency trays and accessory equipment
- Escorts patients to examination rooms
Assists higher-level staff in performance of their duties as assigned.

Schedule: 3–12-hour shifts (1900-0730) or 5–8-hour shifts (2300-0730)

Qualifications
Key Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, patients, and the public
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to collect data and maintain accurate records
- Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on various types of medical equipment
Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
One year of health care experience involving direct patient care
Desired Qualifications:- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions
- General computer skills
- Ability to multitask
