DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Cal Poly Maritime Academy Library invites applications for the temporary, part-time position of Assistant Librarian to teach a credit-bearing course in Information Literacy during the Spring Semester 2026

ABOUT CAL POLY MARITIME ACADEMY: Located on a compact but scenic waterfront campus in Vallejo, California (30 miles northeast of San Francisco), Cal Poly Maritime Academy is a unique and specialized campus of the 23-campus system. Serving a population of approximately 1000 undergraduate and 50 graduate students, we are one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States — and the only one on the West Coast. Cal Poly Maritime Academy offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, International Strategy and Security, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Transportation, and Oceanography. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a non-tenure-track position in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The primary responsibility of this position is to teach two sections of a credit-bearing information literacy course required for freshman and sophomore engineering technology students. The successful candidate will be the instructor of record responsible for the assessment of student learning and the assignment of grades. This course meets for two 50-minute sessions per week per section in-person on the Cal Poly Solano campus in Vallejo, CA. This assignment also includes one hour a week for office hours.

In addition, this position will include additional assistance with duties such as collection development, use of Springshare products, and reference hours.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- An MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent
- Demonstrated understanding of the ACRL Information Literacy Standards and Framework
- Successful teaching experience
- Experience with information resources used in academic libraries
- Experience providing reference, instruction, or outreach services to a diverse population.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collegially in a team setting.
- Demonstrated competency working with computer applications and the ability to learn new software applications.
- Strong interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate to a variety of stakeholders.
- Ability to interact sensitively and effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least three years of experience teaching information literacy at the post-secondary level
- Experience with engineering information resources used in academic libraries
