Department Summary

The Department of Biological Sciences, one of four departments in the College of Science, has over 40 faculty, 175 graduate and 3,000 undergraduate students. Our faculty is a community of scholars dedicated to research and teaching in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Plant Biology, and Organismal-environment interactions. We offer Bachelor’s degrees in Biology, Biochemistry, Ecology, Medical Laboratory Science, and Forensic Science, and Masters and PhDs in Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Environmental Science. We measure our success by the success of our students and the quality of our intellectual contributions to society.

Position Overview

Hourly Laboratory Lead meets regularly with undergraduate students in assigned laboratory course sections to to guide students in laboratory protocols and activities as directed by the Instructional Lab Supervisor. The Laboratory Lead serves as a role model for new Teaching Assistants, and may also offer assistance in lecture courses as required. May assist with lab prep, grading/grade entry, and assisting with lecture courses as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences with 18 or more advanced hours of coursework in the discipline.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, University, department, and laboratory-specific policies and procedures.
  • Ability to take direction and correction from supervisory staff.
  • Working knowledge of equipment/instrumentation associated with the assigned instructional laboratory course/s.
  • Skill in managing one's own time and the time of others (sp. students).
  • Ability to communicate with, and work effectively and patiently with students.
  • Ability to promptly address and/or resolve issues as they arise in scheduled lab section/s.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Biological Sciences and two years of laboratory leadership as a Teaching Assistant in an instructional laboratory course.

Work Schedule:

Tuesdays from 2:00pm-8:00pm, during scheduled meeting days and times scheduled lab meetings, office hours, and lecture assistance as scheduled.
