Job Summary:
The Development Operations (DO) Project Design and Technology (PDT) organization is seeking a Senior Principal Structures Engineer to join the Instrumentation, Test Systems and Assembly Equipment Design teams. This position will provide opportunities to apply your engineering acumen and leadership skills, as well as bring your creativity to bear in different phases of the design process. This role offers growth opportunities to become a future Development Operations Chief or Fellow, with visibility throughout the validation leadership chain.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide guidance to and develop DO design practitioners on structural analysis tools and methodology.
Work closely with Development Operations Structures Fellow/Chief to develop proficiency.
Participate as an active member in cross-discipline integrated product teams to provide design solutions that balance performance, cost, schedule, and quality requirements.
Monitor strain gages applied to PDT designs during engine testing, write clear design substantiation documents and deliver clear technical presentations to internal and external customers.
Develop and incorporate new ways to advance technology and improve processes. Embrace a continuous improvement philosophy.
Develop and sustain a healthy work relationship based on mutual trust with peers and internal customers where significant interaction is expected.
Travel: 20%
Other Major Areas of Responsibilities or Tasks:
Attend and participate in group meetings, design reviews, teleconferences and/or training required.
Actively participate in initiatives for continuous improvement using CORE tools and methods.
Support structures community initiatives.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related field and 10+ years of prior engineering experience, OR
Advanced Degree in a related field and 7+ years of prior engineering experience.
US Citizenship required due to government contracts.
Active US Government Security Clearance required, or ability to obtain and maintain clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
Finite element modeling and analysis, including proficiency with ANSYS workbench and familiarity with classic ANSYS, particularly static, modal & forced response dynamic analysis with complex non-linear boundary conditions such as contact & fastened joints.
A thorough understanding of fatigue and fracture mechanics, including proficiency using PW fatigue and fracture mechanics analysis tools & EKS for HCF, LCF, and remaining life/damage tolerance assessment.
Instrumentation, test planning, test monitoring, and data reduction tools, methods, and processes to validate vibratory stress meet requirements including component testing in the Applied Mechanics Lab and rig/engine test.
The product design review process & requirements, both as a practitioner and reviewer of structural analysis, and validation test plans
Mentoring & training younger less experienced engineers
Experience working in the Aerospace Industry
Strong mechanical aptitude to understand the interactions of complex assemblies and how to translate those
