Philanthropy & Communications Intern

Location: Position is in person at HALO’s office in Washington DC.

Duration: August 2023 – December 2023

Type: Part-time, 15 – 20 hours per week

Compensation: $17 per hour

Reports to: Philanthropy Officer

The HALO Trust (USA) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization specializing in the removal of landmines and other explosive remnants of war, with projects in 28+ countries and territories employing over 10,000 people. HALO’s Washington, DC office works with foundations, government partners, international agencies, and private donors to increase awareness of the impact of landmines and ERW on post-conflict communities and to raise funds to support HALO’s teams working overseas.

The DC office is seeking an enthusiastic intern interested in US international affairs, communications, and philanthropy to support HALO’s Philanthropy and Communications staff with communications and philanthropy tasks, social media, and donor stewardship.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with donor stewardship tasks such as sending thank you notes and mailing materials to donors
  • Assisting with mailing of tax receipts and letters to donors
  • Drafting social media posts and supporting the maintenance of the social media comms calendar
  • Supporting the creation of email newsletter updates to donors
  • Monitoring news media worldwide, particularly for countries where HALO works
  • Sorting and organizing program updates, case studies, and photos as they become available
  • Updating and editing briefs and handouts on HALO programs and projects
  • Administrative tasks such as mailings as necessary
  • Other tasks as assigned

Requirements

Preferred Qualifications / Skills:

Applicants should be highly organized, flexible, self-motivated, and detail-oriented with a strong interest in the non-profit and international development/humanitarian sector. We are looking for the following skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong academic background and an interest in HALO’s mission
  • Current or incoming undergraduate students, graduate students, or recent grads
  • High level of professionalism
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Prior experience in communications or fundraising is preferred, but not required
  • Proficiency in social media and Microsoft suite (including Word, Excel, and Outlook) - Experience with Canva or Adobe In-Design a plus but not required
