Job Duties
The Deputy Director – Community is a key executive leadership position within the Virginia Department of Corrections, reporting directly to the Agency Head. This senior leadership role is responsible for the comprehensive oversight of all community operations including probation and parole, and alternatives to incarceration with a focus on enhancing public safety, promoting offender accountability, and supporting successful reintegration into society. This position is charged with ensuring public safety while supporting individuals under supervision to successfully reintegrate into society. The Deputy Director – Community provides strategic leadership to correctional staff and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to advance the agency’s mission by reducing recidivism and enhancing community well-being.
Minimum Qualifications
Extensive knowledge of community supervision practices, including probation and parole systems. Strong knowledge of state and federal laws governing community supervision and alternatives to incarceration. Proven understanding of evidence-based practices for reducing recidivism and supporting reintegration. Extensive leadership and decision-making skills with demonstrated ability to manage teams and complex systems. Strong management skills with a focus on operational efficiency and staff development. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, particularly in developing and implementing innovative programs. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to effectively work with diverse stakeholders. Proven ability to lead large, complex operations while maintaining alignment with organizational goals. Highly skilled in fostering a culture of accountability, respect, service, and innovation. Experience with strategic planning, policy development, and performance management. Proven ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies and community organizations.
Additional Considerations
Advanced knowledge/experience/education in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field. Extensive experience serving in a senior leadership role in corrections, community supervision or related field.
