Position Summary
The River Guide position requires a professional, fun, energetic individual with good organization and communication skills to guide guests down various rivers and clearly convey safety information. The River Guide works with people of varying ages, skill levels, and familiarity with outdoor environments. Must be able to guide at a proficient level, operate safely, understand river hydrology, and have the ability to make quick decisions on whitewater. River Guides must have a passion for water and be a steward for the outdoor environment. Must be able to work outside in all conditions.
Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities
Guide day trips on the Upper and Lower Deschutes, McKenzie, and North Umpqua Rivers.
Performs lead, sweep, and safety of boat duties as assigned.
Stack, unstack, and tie down boats on trailers and trucks.
Complete assigned tasks while waiting for guests to arrive for trips.
Fit personal floatation devices (PFDs), helmets, and splash gear for guests.
Complete and submit incident and accident reports, when necessary, immediately following an incident or accident.
Participates in pre-and post-trip meetings as scheduled.
Maintain a professional and cooperative attitude in dealing with managers, office staff, co-workers, and guests.
Behave professionally at all times.
Learn about the natural environment and human history of the area and share knowledge with guests.
Treat guests with respect and compassion.
Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Secondary Function
Clean the guide area, refrigerators, and kitchen.
Pack equipment, unpack, clean, and put away all trip gear after the trip.
Wash and hang out the trip rental gear and PFDs.
Assist with vehicle clean-up and fueling.
Provide input on areas for improvement.
Interpersonal Contacts
Applicant must be able to work in a group environment both within the department and also the company as a whole. A guide must have strong guest service and communication skills in order to develop a working partnership with guests.
Specific Job Skills
License(s)/Certification(s): 1st Aid & CPR
Technical: Have or develop proficient paddle captain technique
Physical Capabilities: Can remain outside in all conditions for long periods of
