About the role

Senior Project Engineer - ESS

SKOn, a proud member of SK Group, the second largest conglomerate with a revenue size $150 billion, is one of the fastest-growing battery manufacturers globally. With ambitious plans to reach over 180GWh manufacturing capacity in the US, SKOn is at the forefront of innovation in the energy storage sector. In response to the increasing domestic demand, SKOn is set to manufacture state-of-the-art 5.3MWh DC Blocks, fully compliant with the latest US domestic content requirements and eligible for full ITC benefits. Additionally, SKOn has contracted and awarded projects totaling 7GWh to be installed in the US starting in 2026.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Project Engineer to lead the technical design, engineering, and execution of complex utility-scale and commercial Energy Storage Systems (ESS). The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in power electric systems, including Power Conversion Systems (PCS), battery technologies, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA). This role requires a strong background in electrical design, as well as an advanced understanding of data control systems architecture critical for ESS performance and grid integration.

Key Responsibilities:

ESS Design and Optimization: Lead the complete electrical and control system design for ESS projects, ensuring compliance with all relevant codes, standards (e.g., UL, IEE, NEC), and utility requirements. Optimize system performance, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.

Component Specification: Define detailed technical specifications for major ESS components, including lithium-ion batteries (cells, modules, racks), Power Conversion Systems (PCS), medium and high-voltage balance of plant (BOP), and thermal management systems.

System Integration:
Manage the technical integration of all power electric subsystems, ensuring seamless interaction between the PCS, Battery Management System (BMS), and the plant-level SCADA/control system.

Controls and Data Systems: Design and manage the implementation of the project's data acquisition, monitoring, and control system architecture coordinating with internal BMS engineers and SCADA partners. This includes defining telemetry points, communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, DNP3), and logic for ESS operation, protection, and grid services (e.g., frequency regulation, capacity firming, renewable energy integration).

Engineering Oversight:
Review and approve engineering deliverables from internal teams, vendors, and external engineering firms (e.g., one-line diagrams, electrical schematics, physical layouts, protection and control settings).

Engineering and Technical Deliverables: Oversee the creation of comprehensive technical documentation for each project. This includes developing the system-level single-line diagram for the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), designing the SCADA network architecture diagram, and preparing the detailed electrical and controls specifications for the BESS. Ensure these deliverables meet all project requirements and industry standards, and facilitate effective integration and operation of the energy storage system within the overall plant infrastructure.

Technical Support: Provide expert technical support throughout the project lifecycle, from initial concept and permitting to construction, commissioning, and handover.

Standards and Innovation: Stay abreast of the latest advancements in energy storage technology, grid codes, and data/control system practives to drive continuous improvement and innovation in ESS design.

Required Expertise and Knowledge

Power Electric Systems and Safety
In-depth knowledge of Power Conversion Systems (PCS) operation, control modes (grid-forming/following), performance characteristics, and integration into AC/DC electrical systems.
- Comprehensive understanding of various battery chemistries (primarily Li-ion), their aging characteristics, thermal management requirements, and associated Battery Management Systems (BMS) functionality.

- Expertise in medium and high-voltage electrical design, including transformers, switchgear, protective relaying, grounding, and lightning protection.
- Strong knowledge of key energy storage safety standards and certifications, including NFPA 855, NFPA 68, NFPA 69, NFPA 70, and NFPA 70E. Experienced with UL 9540 and UL 9540A standards for energy storage equipment and safety testin
