The Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation sets the strategic direction and oversees the administration of the University of Ottawa’s research enterprise, including funding, equipment and facilities, international collaborations, partnerships and business development.

Position purpose:

Reporting to the Senior Director, Ottawa Health and Life Sciences Innovation Hub, provides operational leadership in the planning, development, and delivery of effective programming for the Canadian Pandemic Preparedness Hub (CP2H). Responsible for executing strategies focused on leveraging business and research partnerships to support the hub’s biomanufacturing and pandemic preparedness mandate including the expansion of existing research capabilities, GMP manufacturing infrastructure and talent investments supporting the development of new biotherapeutics, vaccines, small molecule drugs, diagnostic platforms and technologies to support Canada’s pandemic readiness.  

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Working closely with CP2H Directors, oversees operations related to the post-award management and development of research, infrastructure and experiential training initiatives.
  • Formulates, negotiates, reviews and approves for signature extramural research sponsorship agreements to obtain the best possible terms and conditions needed by the institution. These negotiations include financial arrangements (budgets and payment schedules), ownership and disposition of intellectual property rights, publication rights, liability risks and indemnification requirements.
  • Assists with monitoring the progress of research activities (including preparation of reports and audits) as required by directors, scientific co-leads, investigators, administrators, funding agencies, regulatory bodies and/or internal quality assurance representatives. Facilitates necessary data flow both internally and externally, and with collaborators from other institutions and industrial partners.
  • Plans, organizes, directs and controls CP2H grants and contract operations in alignment with institutional strategic priorities and policies. Ensures that services to institutions, researchers, industry collaborators and research students such as website and other interfacing platforms operate in the most efficient and effective manner while providing a high level of customer service.

What you will bring:

  • Advanced degree (PhD or Master) in Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of project management practices with at least five years’ academic and scientific project management experience in the field.
  • Research and/or industry background in biotherapeutics, small molecule and/or diagnostics development, GMP manufacturing, regulatory processes, and/or clinical trials.
  • Experience preparing research funding proposals, drafting and administering interinstitutional agreements and collaborative research agreements with industry.
  • Knowledge of policies, guidelines and granting/contracting practices of federal and provincial funding agencies and departments, as well as granting foundations.
  • Knowledge of the health and life sciences innovation economy including research, technology development, company creation, training and innovation funding programs (e.g., NSERC CREATE, MITACS, OCI C2C, NRC IRAP, others…), project and seed stage funding, private and venture capital investment and private-public partnerships.
  • Ability to build and maintain good relationships with many stakeholders and counterparts in other organizations
  • Excellent problem-solving, conflict resolution and business management skills
  • Ability to coordinate a multifunctional team
  • Excellent communication skills in both official languages (English and French) with experience in addressing senior leadership.
