Position Description:

The Senior Navigation Engineer will help develop and verify the GPS/INS navigation system for NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS). This role will develop and maintain a detailed understanding of the navigation sensors and their interactions and interfaces to flight computers and software. Additional work may include analyzing the avionics of the Exploration Upper Stage (EUS). This role will create software models that integrate with existing 6-DOF simulations and navigation software. This role will assess and analyze test data to characterize systems and to identify and isolate unexpected results and discrepancies between models and observed behaviors.

A degree from an ABET-accredited university in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is required.  Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a PhD, an MS with at least 15 years of experience, or a BS with at least 20 years of experience. 

Experience: 

Required skills and experience:

·       Knowledge of inertial navigation and GPS-aided navigation systems, preferably for aerospace applications

·       Experience with models of inertial sensors, inertial navigation systems, and GPS receivers, including the effects of stochastic errors and latency. Knowledge of how various error sources effect the integrated navigation solution.

·       Experience with navigation error analysis, including sensitivity analysis, covariance analysis. 

·       Ability to assess data to characterize system performance and identify anomalous behaviors in navigation systems.
