This position is eligible for hybrid/remote for experience inpatient coders.

Compensation Range:

$22.97 - $34.46 per hour, depending on experience

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assign accurate ICD-10-CM diagnosis and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes to inpatient records based on clinical documentation, in compliance with official coding guidelines.

  • Determine and assign appropriate MS-DRG or APR-DRG groupings using a compliant and policy-driven process to support accurate reimbursement.

  • Abstract essential data elements from the medical record—including diagnoses, procedures, demographics, and discharge disposition—into the health information system.

  • Utilize computer-assisted coding (CAC) tools, encoders, and coding reference materials efficiently to support accurate code assignment and productivity.

  • Identify incomplete, unclear, or ambiguous documentation and initiate compliant physician queries to clarify the information necessary for accurate coding.

  • Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) specialists to align coding with documentation and assist in identifying trends or education opportunities for providers.

  • Maintain daily coding productivity by completing the required number of records as outlined in department standards and policies.

  • Stay current with official coding guidelines, payer-specific requirements, and regulatory changes affecting coding and reimbursement through regular review and training.

  • Report coding-related issues or documentation concerns to supervisors or department managers for resolution and quality assurance.

  • Adhere to the Standards of Ethical Coding as established by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and follow organization-specific compliance policies.

  • Fulfill continuing education (CE) requirements necessary to maintain coding certification and stay informed on industry best practices.

  • Respect and comply with all privacy and medico-legal regulations, including HIPAA guidelines related to confidentiality, release of information, and patient rights.

Position Qualifications:

Minimum Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and CPC, CCA, CCS-P or CCS certification; or enrollment in or completion of a coding training program and eligible to sit for the CPC, CCA, CCS-P, or CCCS exam; or an Associate’s Degree in HIT with RHIT certification or eligible to sit for the RHIT exam.

  • Must obtain one of the above noted credentials within 18 months of hire.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in HIT with RHIA certification.

  • One year of coding experience.
