About the role:
The Sr. Packaging Engineer develops and analyzes packaging, products, materials, processes, and equipment for medical devices. The incumbent will compile, analyze and report on operational, test, and research data to establish performance standards for newly designed or modified packaging, products, processes and materials.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Partnering with project teams on packaging, product design and development, materials testing, specification preparation, and process capability studies
- Ensuring that proposed changes to packaging designs undergo a comprehensive and systematic evaluation and are supported by proper justification and data collection to meet performance standards
- Planning project activities and times lines and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure project success
- Working with external suppliers to design, qualify and procure packaging components
- Conducting packaging testing and/or bench study experiments for commercial design improvements; train technicians and operators on new processes or test procedures
- Collaborating with team members to develop and execute resource plans, due diligence and integration activities
- Creating and managing packaging-related documentation such as specifications, test plans and reports; ensure all documented activities meet the appropriate regulatory guidelines
- Performing root cause analysis on designs, materials, and process failures to summarize test results
- Designing, procuring, and fabricating tooling and fixtures, identify areas for continuous improvement and execute value improvement projects
- Keeping abreast of new technologies and advances in the medical device packaging industry
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in any engineering discipline
- Experience working in the medical device, pharmaceutical or similar industry
- Minimum 7 years of packaging engineering experience with related equipment and materials (i.e. paperboard, corrugated, flexible films, Tyvek, thermoformed trays and injection molded parts)
- Proficient with MS Office applications (i.e. Teams, Word, PowerPoint, Project etc.)
- Ability to work independently to complete tasks and meet timelines
Preferred qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Packaging Engineering
- Working knowledge of capital systems and crate packaging
- Experience with equipment qualification, packaging process and testing requirements (ASTM and ISTA)
- Understanding of quality system controls (e.g. user needs, design inputs/outputs, verification/validation, etc)
- Experience with sustainability and process improvement initiatives
- Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with individuals on all levels
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills; analytical and process-driven
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects efficiently
