Work Arrangement

Hybrid - This means the successful candidate is expected to report to their work location three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business]. This position has the flexibility to be in Warren, MI, Mountain View, CA, or Austin, TX.

The Role

The Autonomous Robotics Center (ARC) is seeking a Senior User Experience Designer to lead the design of intuitive, human-centered experiences across advanced robotic systems. This role is ideal for a seasoned designer with a strong technical foundation, a passion for robotics, and a proven ability to drive design strategy in fast-paced, cross-functional environments. You’ll collaborate with engineering, product, and industrial design teams to shape how autonomous robots interact with people in complex, real-world environments such as manufacturing facilities.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the end-to-end UX strategy and execution for physical and digital robotic systems, from concept through deployment.
  • Translate complex research insights, user needs, and technical constraints into scalable, intuitive design solutions.
  • Collaborate deeply with robotics engineers, perception teams, and product managers to ensure seamless integration of UX into system architecture.
  • Guide and mentor external industrial design partners and junior designers, ensuring alignment with ARC’s design vision and technical roadmap.
  • Design for multimodal interaction (visual, auditory, haptic) across both hardware and software interfaces.
  • Rapidly prototype and test interaction models using tools such as Figma, Unity, or ROS-based simulation environments.
  • Contribute to the development of design systems and UX standards for robotics platforms.

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 5+ years of UX design experience, with at least 2 years in robotics, embedded systems, or hardware-integrated products.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing user-centered design for complex systems, including physical-digital interfaces.
  • Proficiency in tools such as Figma, Adobe CC, and prototyping environments (e.g., Unity, WebGL, or ROS-based tools).
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams including mechanical, electrical, and software engineers.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead design initiatives and manage external contributors or vendors.
  • Bachelor’s degree in UX Design, HCI, Industrial Design, Engineering, or a related field.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience designing for human-robot interaction (HRI) or autonomous systems in industrial or manufacturing settings.
  • Familiarity with ROS (Robot Operating System), Gazebo, or other robotics simulation tools.
  • Understanding of accessibility standards and inclusive design principles in physical environments.
  • Background in cognitive ergonomics, systems thinking, or behavioral design.
  • Experience contributing to or building design systems for hardware-software ecosystems.

Compensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position, as well as geography of the selected candidate.

  • The salary range for this role is $94,800 - $176,100 . The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
