Lecturer in Biology (neurobiology)

The Department of Biology at Amherst College invites applications for a full-time position as a lecturer in the area of neurobiology, with the appointment to begin on July 1, 2025. The successful candidate will teach the equivalent of six courses per academic year. This position will be situated in the Department of Biology and contribute significantly to the college’s Neuroscience Program.

We seek a colleague who is passionate about teaching neurobiology in a liberal arts college setting. The primary teaching responsibilities of this position will be (1) to teach the required 200-level course in neurobiology (BIOL 214), (2) to teach advanced laboratory and seminar courses in neurobiology as determined by the candidate’s area of expertise, and (3) to contribute to an introductory course in molecular and cellular biology (BIOL 191) as needed. Depending on the needs of the Department of Biology and the Neuroscience Program, involvement in other courses that suit the candidate’s expertise will be added where time permits. As a valued colleague, the candidate will also take part in major advising, senior capstone experiences, and other important contributions to the life of the Department of Biology and the Neuroscience Program. The department is particularly interested in candidates who are able to supervise research students, including senior honors students, as part of the teaching load. 

This is a full-time appointment with an initial three-year term and the possibility of renewal for an additional three-year term as a lecturer, which may be followed by five-year renewable appointments as a senior lecturer.  Reappointment and promotion are contingent upon positive reviews of teaching and mentorship.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in hand or have fulfilled all requirements for the degree by the start of the appointment. Postdoctoral experience and prior experience teaching undergraduates is preferred. Pedagogical support is offered by Amherst’s Center for Teaching and Learning and state-of-the-art classroom and laboratory facilities that are housed within a science center that was completed in 2018.
