As an Applications Scientist in Evonik’s Coating Additives business line, your work will directly influence the performance, durability, and sustainability of coatings used across automotive, transportation, and industrial markets worldwide. You’ll support critical lab projects, understand and develop new testing capabilities, and ensure our customers’ products meet the highest performance standards. Your technical expertise will help bring innovative solutions from concept to application, making a measurable difference in the markets we serve.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work with the Senior Chemist to plan and develop lab experiments and programs and then conduct and analyze laboratory experiments for customer, application development, and new product development projects.

• Translate data into clear, concise reports and presentations for internal stakeholders.

• Develop and refine test methods and application techniques to meet evolving market requirements.

• Maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize spray booths, spray robots, and related testing equipment.

• Collaborate with global R&D, technical service, and commercial teams to share knowledge and support innovation.

• Lead and participate in safety activities, including Design Hazard Reviews (DHRs), Management of Change (MOCs), and creation of Safe Work Practices (SWPs).

• Maintain a safe, compliant laboratory environment with accurate chemical inventory and calibrated equipment.

REQUIREMENTS

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in a physical science or related discipline (required).

• 3-5+ years of technical laboratory experience preferred; candidates with slightly less experience may be considered if other qualifications are strong.

Technical Skills

• Experience formulating and applying coatings (manual and/or robotic) strongly preferred; willingness to learn is essential.

• Proficiency in Excel; ability to learn BYK software for analytical test equipment.

• Familiarity with chemical/process safety requirements and hazard review processes

• Experience with corrosion/weathering testing equipment is an advantage.
