Job Description
We are currently looking for a Government Affairs Analyst EMENA, to be based in Oegstgeest, Netherlands (near Leiden) and reporting to the regional Government Affairs Lead. In this role you will act as a trusted advisor for providing and executing on some of the most critical strategic initiatives for both Avery Dennison’s Materials in the EMENA region.
This role is a great opportunity for a candidate to help build a government affairs function, joining a growing team and have a pivotal influence that ensures Avery Dennison is at the forefront of the Green Deal, Circular Economy Action plan and similar legislative initiatives at the EU and national levels.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and map stakeholders and influencers in light of Avery Dennison’s strategies
- Monitor relevant legislative developments around packaging circularity, plastics and deforestation and help assess the impact and implications thereof on the company’s current and future priorities
- Develop advocacy strategies around key policies of interest to Avery Dennison and help defining the company’s messaging in close cooperation with the business
- Be a trusted advisor to different business functions, helping key internal stakeholders understand the importance of EU legislation and supporting internal adjustment pathways
- Use and develop excellent networks and relationships in support of Avery Dennison’s advocacy interests
- Work closely with government stakeholders and others who have influence, (associations and key businesses and NGOs) to ensure we are always maintaining and building on the exceptional working relationships we have with the industries and environments we operate in
- Represent Avery Dennison in organizations and events, identifying suitable opportunities for the leadership team to participate in;
- Draft position papers, consultation responses, one pagers as well as policy communication pieces to help support advocacy work
Qualifications
What do you bring?
- Knowledge of EU policies relating to packaging circularity, recycling and waste
- Deep understanding of the EU decision-making process, key actors therein and political dynamics
- Demonstrable experience of substantial contribution to public affairs campaigns and projects, ideally with a clear focus on packaging circularity, recycling, circularity policy
- Excellent understanding of how to conduct advocacy work combined with strategic acumen that helps you understand how to build compelling messages to achieve Avery Dennison’s advocacy objectives
- Excellent in writing and in drafting texts such as position papers and guidance notes
- Ability to work with a multi-disciplinary, multi-national team of business personnel, legal and other internal experts and external consultants;
- Highly developed values, ethics, integrity and focus on diversity and inclusion
What We Expect From You
- Full working proficiency in English and at least one other language (Dutch, French or German is a plus)
- Advanced degree (or equivalent practical experience) in political science, law, sustainability, or a field related to our issues (e.g., environmental science, chemistry, communications)
- Excellent communication skills, including public speaking and a proven ability to influence external actors
- 3-5 years’ experience within government affairs, public policy or related fields with a proven record of advocacy activities and experience in building engaging campaigns in a policy setting. Politically aware and equipped to develop relationships and dialogue with government officials and politicians, as well as with other industry, association and NGO stakeholders
