What’s the role?

We are looking for a Director of Engineering to lead the Marketplace Confidence initiative in Trust & Safety. Marketplace Confidence ensures that Etsy’s global marketplace is safe for buyers and sellers, and that buyers can find the best of what Etsy has to offer. Our work includes identity verification, content moderation, policy enforcement, and regulatory compliance. Our work covers many systems, from internal tools to machine learning.

In this role, you will support four engineering managers and your team of co-leads in Product, Design, Analytics, and Research. You will use your technical background to serve as a thought partner to the rest of the initiative's leadership. With your co-leads, you will help your teams make the right bets, and you'll open up engineering possibilities by helping teams find areas to work together.

Each team works with a particular set of challenges and opportunities. One team is developing novel approaches to content moderation at scale with machine learning. Another looks beyond today's regulations to ask, how can we evolve our platform to put us in a better position for any future regulations?

The four teams in this initiative have established leaders. There's a range of engineering experience, including staff engineers and machine learning specialists. We have enormous opportunities to build lasting solutions to tricky problems, and get at the heart of what makes Etsy special: a global marketplace of creativity and human connection.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering, Marketplace Services and the base salary range will be 239,000.00 - 311,000.00 USD per year. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. What does the day-to-day look like?

• Act as a strategic lead on high-profile projects, leading large, often multi-functional company-wide projects.
• Co-lead OKR creation and clearly define the goals and success metrics for your teams.
• With your managers and leads, set the long-term technical direction for the initiative.
• With your peer technical leaders, make build-versus-buy decisions that help us to focus our engineers on the right work. The trust and safety industry is developing quickly, so there are always new products and services to evaluate.
• Collaborate across teams and groups to tackle broad challenges—for example, identity verification.
• Develop the careers of the people you manage, and find high-impact opportunities to mentor others around you.

Qualifications

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• Technical flexibility and acumen: You don’t need to have hands-on experience with all of the work in this domain, but you should have a strong technical background and the ability to learn what you need in order to provide technical leadership and clarity, and to help your teams to be successful.
• You have experience leading teams that build products for a variety of customers—external as well as internal.. You may even have previous experience in content moderation or other aspects of T&S engineering.
• You enjoy working with groups outside engineering and translating high-level business requirements into technical architecture. You should also be able to comfortably communicate about the technical details of our tools and stack.
• You have a pr
