Job Summary
This advanced level position within Dominion Energy’s Unmanned Systems Group independently manages, leads, and coordinates complex land and aerial surveying work which requires thorough knowledge of the subject matter (to include land surveying disciplines associated with utilities).
Specific responsibilities:
- Provides surveying expertise and guidance to fellow team members, consultants, and internal resources.
- Provides project leadership to aerial systems staff and crews. Attends project meetings and prepares survey project work summaries.
- Coordinates survey requests between company and approved contractors.
- Analyzes and interprets plans and specifications to determine work procedures.
- Approves and certifies drawings and aerial surveys for provision to government entities.
- Ensures adherence with survey standards of practice, specifications, and established company standards. Approves survey field notes and transmits to internal departments. Research both internal and external data records to obtain right of way, easement and company fee owned documents and deeds.
- Coordinates related assignments to meet time and cost objectives.
- Reviews and approves contractor invoices.
- Performs quality control checks on contractor assigned work.
- Determines methods and procedures for establishing or re-establishing survey grade control.
- Assure that accurate field location and grade control are communicated with other internal department and clients on time to accommodate tight project guidelines.
- Prepares specifications and detailed standard reports to support survey procedures.
- Able to manage/perform design related surveying projects using relevant office software and aerial assets. Projects may include boundary, ALTA (American Land Title Association), topographic, and control networking.
- Maintains strict safety standards and expectations within all project assignments and contractor engagements in accordance with Dominion Energy policies.
- Possesses the ability to learn and master surveying software systems and UAS post processing software tools.
- Ensure compliance with state regulations to sign and seal survey plans as the licensed professional within the state.
- Responsible for field data collection, analysis, and communication with leaders and / or stakeholders related to land development projects.
- Uses photogrammetry to develop product information.
- Stores and disperses collected data to appropriate groups while retaining appropriate security protocols.
- Provides feedback to enable system improvements. Keeps up to date with latest federal/state/local regulations for drones (UAVs/RPAs) cation.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
Requirements for this posting:
- Must be a licensed Land Surveyor (L.S.) in the Commonwealth of Virginia in good standing.
- Possesses the ability to obtain a FAA Part 107 UAS pilot’s license through the FAA within six months of hiring date.
- 5+ years of land surveying experience.
Other knowledge, skills, abilities and experience:
- Strong knowledge of CAD, GIS, Pix4D;
- Strong knowledge of algebra, trigonometry and geometry;
- Strong leadership skills;
- Ability to provide guidance to less experienced survey techs;
- Strong written and verbal communications skills;
- Ability to analyze drawings and specifications and to make precise decisions;
- Strong personal computer skills;
- Ability to work independently or as a team member; -
- Working knowledge of Global Positioning System practices and procedures;
- Working knowledge of PLS CAD software;
- Working knowledge of various GIS software and applications;
- Proficiency in construction layout. Ability and willingness to apprentice surveyor in training candidates.<
