GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES

The IT Senior Infrastructure Engineer is the key technical leader responsible for the full lifecycle management of all major infrastructure projects, from initial strategy and design through final deployment and operational handover. This role ensures the engineering, deployment, and ongoing operation of secure, highly available, and high-performance computing platforms, servers, networks, and telecommunications systems.


This engineer is the authority on designing and developing cutting-edge infrastructure solutions that align with Piedmont HealthCare’s preferences and adhere to the strictest industry standards. In partnership with the broader infrastructure team, the Senior Infrastructure Engineer drives the strategic direction for all infrastructure hardware and software decisions, acting as the primary subject matter expert and project driver.

Provides technical leadership, project guidance, and mentorship to less experienced engineers ensuring high standards are met across all project deliverables.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Owns and leads major infrastructure projects from inception (feasibility, requirement gathering) through execution (design, implementation, testing) to closeout and review.
  • Architects and designs robust, scalable systems and infrastructure based on comprehensive needs analysis and future-state planning.
  • Manages the entire deployment, maintenance, and upgrade roadmap for critical infrastructure assets, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations.
  • Participates in, and often leads, the planning, design, and execution of all necessary infrastructure testing efforts.
  • Maintains, tests, and continually refines Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) plans and systems, ensuring enterprise resilience.
  • Supports and monitors complex systems, applications, and networks ensuring control, data integrity, security, and accessibility for all users.
  • Develops, maintains, and recommends tooling for capacity planning and performance management.
  • Reviews system performance reports, coordinates cross-system changes, and institutes continuous improvement cycles to maximize system availability and reliability.
  • Researches and identifies the most appropriate modern technology stacks for infrastructure delivery, advocating for strategic technology adoption.
  • Collaborates closely with the Information Security team, participating in Incident Response efforts and advising on the security aspects of all new infrastructure designs.
  • Coordinates problem resolution across functional areas, providing Subject Matter Expertise (SME) for diagnosing and resolving complex technical issues, and managing related service/incident queues.
  • Develops comprehensive technical documentation for new solutions.

Requirements

  

EDUCATION: 

Associates degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Business Systems, or a Healthcare-related field with a strong technical focus is preferred. Relevant work experience and/or technical certification can substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.


EXPERIENCE

5+ years of relevant experience designing, deploying, and administering enterprise infrastructure solutions, preferably within a clinical or large ambulatory physician practice setting.



CORE REQUIREMENTS & TECHNICAL EXPERTISE

  • Expertise in designing and deploying highly available solutions.
  • Deep experience with VMware vSphere design, installation, and management
  • Proven ability to design and manage SAN solutions.
  • Strong foundation in designing and managing Active Directory and related enterprise identity services.
  • Deep experience with the Microsoft 365 (M365) suite, including architecture, security, and administration of Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and modern identity management via Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD).
  • Proficiency with Cisco networking equipment, including reference architectures for data centers and office locations.
  • Possesses a proven ability to push collaboratively for long-term, permanent solutions to recurring infrastructure challenges.
  • Relevant technical certifications are preferred (e.g., Cisco CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+, Server+).
