Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a professional, compassionate, and detail-oriented Illinois Correctional Industries (ICI) and Heavy Equipment Training Program Instructor. The successful candidate for this position will instruct individuals in custody in the safe and correct operation of Heavy Equipment Simulators, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Simulators, and approved industrial vocational curriculum related to any heavy equipment and the manufacturing process it is utilized for. Patience, consistency, and excellent communication skills (both verbal and nonverbal) are required for this position to help others effectively operate heavy equipment on computerized simulators. Job Responsibilities

  1. Serves as Heavy Equipment/CDL Instructor for Illinois Correctional Industries (ICI) Heavy Equipment Training Program.
  2. Provides individual in custody students with practical knowledge and work skills to facilitate student entry into employment with heavy equipment operating and/or as a commercial truck driver.
  3. Instructs individual in custody students in the safe and correct operations of heavy equipment on computerized simulators.
  4. Conducts education and outreach activities to potential employers to assist in obtaining employment linkage for student individuals in custody that complete the assigned courses.
  5. Conducts regular maintenance checks on all computers and simulators used in the Heavy Equipment Training Program.
  6. Monitors individual in custody students to ensure discipline in the Heavy Equipment Training Program.
  7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four (4) years of high school.
  2. Requires two (2) years of practical journey level experience in Heavy Equipment operation, as a CDL Driver/Operator, or in the delivery of Heavy Equipment Curriculum Based Educational programming.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Prefers at least three (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment or driving CDL tractor/trailers.
  2. Prefers at least three (3) years of professional experience of the practices, methods, tools, and materials of a trade commonly taught in vocational education.
  3. Prefers at least three (3) years of experience utilizing tools, materials, and equipment of a Heavy Equipment trade.
  4. Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in a production setting.
  5. Prefers at least two (2) years of experience in inventory management.
  6. Prefers at least two (2) years of experience instructing curriculum-based programming.<
