A Brief Overview
Primary Care nursing is a specialty within the nursing profession that encompasses the care of individuals across the life span who present with physical, emotional, or psychological alterations of health. Primary Care nurses provide episodic and chronic nursing care to patients of all ages and all health conditions in a variety of ambulatory settings—rural, urban, and virtual. Primary Care nurses have adapted nursing process to include components of triage/assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation of human responses when caring for patients.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) Preferred


Experience Qualifications

  • Experience in a clinic setting. Preferred

  • Experience working with infants, children and adolescents. Preferred


Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to rights of patient/significant other, as identified within the institution. (Required proficiency)

  • Demonstrates awareness and application of safety issues as identified within the institution. (Required proficiency)

  • Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and departmental functioning. Strives to manage situations in a manner, which minimizes risk to the patient and the institution. (Required proficiency)

  • Demonstrates competency in selected psychomotor skills. (Required proficiency)

  • Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, non-verbal and written methods. (Required proficiency)

  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations related to medication administration and equipment calibration. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. (Required proficiency)


Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered Nurse - KSBN A multistate license with the ability to practice within the State of Kansas is also accepted. Required

  • Basic Life Support - BLS RQI, CPR or ACLS certifications may be required in lieu of or in addition to BLS depending on department. Must have within 90 days of hire.

  • Pediatric Chemotherapy & Biotherapy Provider - Magnet - CPHON - Magnet Required only for staff administering chemotherpay

  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support - PALS Required only for staff providing sedation assistance

  • Certified Pediatric Nurse - PNCB - Magnet Preferred

  • Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization - PEARS Preferred


What you will do

  • Collects pertinent data and information relative to the patient, situation, or setting.

  • Analyzes assessment data to determine actual or potential problems, and issues.

  • Develops a collaborative plan encompassing strategies to achieve expected outcomes. Identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient or situation.

  • Promote infection prevention through use of standard precautions, proper procedure in dressing changes, wound care, hand hygiene and cleanliness of the patient rooms/department.

  • Implements identified plan through coordination of care and employs strategies to promote health and wellness.

  • Evaluates progress toward attainment of goals and outcomes.

  • Delivers professional nursing care guided by Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring illustrated by creating caring relationships, taking time to have uninterrupted moments with patients and displaying unconditional acceptance and respect.

  • Promotes a mutually respectful environment that encourages the exchange of ideas and supports the effectiveness of professional relationships and integrates ethics in all aspects of practice.

  • Demonstrates advocacy in all roles and settings.

  • Practices Diversity, Equity and Inclusion principles in their daily work by respecting others’ uniqueness, perspectives, backgrounds or beliefs.

  • Communicates effectively in all areas of professional practice.
