Lead Marine Systems Technician

Location: San Diego, CA 

The Marine Systems Technician will be responsible for the maintenance, repair and modification of all associated boats and systems. This employee plans and accomplishes complete projects in all aspects of operation and maintenance of marine propulsion and auxiliary engineering equipment and systems no supervision to meet contract requirements of the customer. 

Complexity of assignments typically requires considerable creativity and judgment to devise approaches to accomplish work, resolve design and operational problems, and make decisions in situations where standard maritime and engineering procedures may not be applicable.   Safely operate and maintain daily, the propulsion and auxiliary engineering equipment and systems on associated craft. Direct the subordinate personnel to the safe accomplishment of all tasking in meeting the mission of the contract customer. To be covered by these definitions, employees must meet all of the following criteria: 

Be able to provide semi-professional technical support for engineers working in such areas as research, design, development, testing, or manufacturing process improvement. Work pertains to electrical, electronic, or mechanical components or equipment. These technicians are required to have some practical knowledge of science or engineering. Some positions may require a practical knowledge of mathematics or computer science. Included are workers who prepare design drawings and assist with the design, evaluation, and/or modification of machinery and equipment.   This technician performs non-routine and complex assignments involving responsibility for planning and conducting a complete project of relatively limited scope or a portion of a larger and more diverse project, selects and adapts plans, techniques, designs, or layouts, contacts personnel in related activities to resolve problems and coordinate the work, reviews, analyzes, and integrates the technical work of others. Supervisor or professional engineer outlines objectives, requirements, and design approaches. Completed work is reviewed for technical adequacy and satisfaction of requirements. This incumbent may train and be assisted by lower level technicians, and performs one or a combination of the following: Designs, develops, and constructs major units, devices, or equipment; conducts tests or experiments; analyzes results and redesigns or modifies equipment to improve performance; and reports results. From general guidelines and specifications (e.g., size or weight requirements), develops designs for equipment without critical performance requirements that are difficult to satisfy such as engine parts, research instruments, or special purpose circuitry. Analyzes technical data to determine applicability to design problems; selects from several possible design layouts; calculates design data; and prepares layouts, detailed specifications, parts lists, estimates, procedures, etc. May check and analyze drawings or equipment to determine adequacy of drawings and design. Responsibilities: Plans or assists in planning tests to evaluate equipment performance. Determines test requirements, equipment modification, and test procedures; conducts tests using all types of instruments; analyzes and evaluates test results, and prepares reports on findings and recommendations. Prepares designs and specifications for various complex equipment and systems such as marine systems and equipment and deck equipment.   Plans approach to solve design problems, conceive and recommend new techniques; resolves design problems with contract personnel, and assures compatibility of design with other parts of the craft system. Develops new processes and component systems and coordinates trials to test effectiveness of the processes and systems; uses untried and untested measures and techniques; and improves the performance of the craft crew and equipment. May advise users on re-design to solve unique operational deficiencies. Establishes and monitors the progress and effectiveness of the craft marine propulsion and auxiliary engineering systems and equipment preventive and corrective maintenance programs. 

Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen. Candidate must maintain a US Government (DoD) Secret Clearance for this position.  


Qualification Requirements: 

- Extensive experience (5 years or greater) required as a factory warranty certified marine engine technician for:

- Cummins

- Westerbeke

- Yamaha

- Honda

- Mercury

- Evinrude-Johnson

 

- Extensive experience (5 years or greater) working on small boat hull and ancillary equipment. 

 

- Extensive working knowledge of basic boat wiring and electrical distribution systems. 

 

- Experience in launch and recovery of small boats.
