Position Summary

Under the supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician provides pharmaceutical care services to patients by assisting in the preparation, dispensing, and record keeping of medications for all patients. The Pharmacy Technician will function in strict accordance with the HCHC policies and procedures, as well as federal and state regulations.

Requirements

  • Assists the pharmacists in the preparation of filling and dispensing medications accurately and safely. 
  • Counting tablets/capsules, measuring liquids, labeling bottles and presenting completed prescriptions to the pharmacist for approval. 
  • Effectively  communicates with the pharmacists, technicians, pharmacy cashiers, and other HCHC staff members.
  • Contacts insurance companies and provider offices as needed. 
  • Resolve third party billing and/or payment issues and obtain refill authorizations. 
  • Escalate unresolved issues as needed.
  • Operates and uses pharmacy computer systems and software efficiently. 
  • Identifies and escalates any medication therapy problems including therapeutic duplications, medication allergies, clinically significant drug-drug, drug-disease, drug-nutrient, or drug-laboratory test interactions.
  • Orders, adjusts and maintains pharmacy inventory of prescription and non-prescription medications and supplies. Performs routine checks for inventory accuracy and out of date stock medications.
  • Refers questions regarding prescriptions, insurance issues, drug information, or other health matters to the pharmacist.
  • Completes work activities successfully through effective management of time, tasks and available resources.
  • Performs daily opening and closing procedures and end of month (EOM) procedures.
  • Addresses customer concerns and/or directs them, as appropriate, to other staff members.
  • Is vigilant in the performance of duties and attention to accuracy and detail, to help minimize medication errors. However, if a medication event occurs, will report the event as defined in policy and procedure
  • Performs the duties of Pharmacy Cashier, as needed, and assists with their questions. 
  • Identifies language barriers of the patient and seeks out options to improve communication of health information.
  • Is an active participant in pharmacy activities and makes suggestions to improve pharmacy services and operations as needed.
  • Assemble quarterly documents for storage: invoices, End of Day Ledgers, Business Reports, Third party payment vouchers, etc.
  • Maintains a positive, professional appearance and attitude in dealing with HCHC staff and patients.
  • Reports medication events as defined in policy and procedure.
  • Collaborates with organizations including insurance companies, community resources, consistent with HIPAA guidelines to communicate patient care needs and to maintain continuity of care as needed.
  • Refers patients to the HCHC resources for insurance enrollment and navigation when appropriate.
  • Safely drives the company vehicle and distributes according to HCHC Policy medications as part of the Pharmacy Delivery program. 
  • Assists in the orientation of new personnel when asked.
  • When requested by HCHC Administration or the Pharmacy Director, represents Pharmacy at committee or community events/meetings.
  • Comply with  and set example of compliance with HCHCs policies/procedures/practices and comply with legal requirements for non-profit organizations.
  • Comply with all state and federal legal requirements pertaining to the practice of pharmacy.

· Performs other duties as assigned. 

Required Skills and Abilities

· Interact successfully with patients and in a multidisciplinary setting; ability to work courteously and effectively as a team member to support quality/efficiency standards.

· Work independently, demonstrate strong attention to detail, and perform required tasks in a methodical manner with speed and accuracy. 

· Provide information in verbal and written form professionally.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent, required. Some college courses preferred. 
  • Current certification by the Commonwealth of Virgi
