Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are actively looking for a Sr. Coastal Engineer to join our one of our North Carolina offices (Charlotte, Raleigh, Wilmington) on a part time basis.  As part of the Coastal Group, the Sr. Coastal Engineer Leads multiple large projects for urban waterfront and coastal structures, including marinas, marine terminals, urban waterfront developments and cruise ship facilities; wetland restoration, dredging, shore protection structures, and flood walls.  This position will also take a primary role in developing and assisting with USACE business development and project delivery initiatives companywide, and assist in mentoring coastal staff and providing QA/QC for projects.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Leads and designs multiple larger construction projects by studying project concept, architectural drawings, and models.
  • Leads and prepares multiple large engineering design by collecting and studying reports, maps, drawings, aerial photographs, and tests on soil composition, terrain, hydrological characteristics, and related topographical and geologic data.
  • Leads the analysis of multiple large project costs by calculating labor, material, and related costs.
  • Creates multiple feasibility studies by analyzing engineering design, conducting environmental impact studies, and assembling data.
  • Leads the development of multiple large construction specifications, plans, and schedules to produce engineering documents.
  • Researches and assists in complying with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; and advising management on needed actions.
  • Successfully support ongoing Coastal / Water practice through contacts and business development efforts working with EPA, Army Corps of Engineers, NOAA, Local Environmental agencies, as well as private sector clients
  • Implements scientific and regulatory tasks for projects to ensure compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations, and policies, including NEPA, Endangered Species Act, and Clean Water Act

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Water Resources or Coastal Engineering; required
  • Master’s degree in Coastal Engineering; Preferred
  • 25+ years of experience as a coastal engineer; required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in North Carolina or the ability to obtain via reciprocity within 6 months of hire; required
  • 15+ years of experience on USACE projects; required
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation) 
  • Availability and willingness to travel
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171
