Position Summary

The Hospice Director of Clinical Services (DCS) Non-Registered Nurse is responsible for modeling the Compassus values of Compassion, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Innovation and for promoting the Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of Success as the foundation. S/he is responsible for upholding the Code of Ethical Conduct and for promoting positive working relationships within the company, among all departments, and all external stakeholders. The Hospice Director of Clinical Services (DCS) Non-Registered Nurse is a leadership role responsible for modeling and promoting the core values of Compassus, including Compassion, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Innovation. The DCS will uphold the Code of Ethical Conduct and foster positive relationships within the organization, across departments, and with external stakeholders. The DCS will oversee the Bereavement Coordinator (BC), Volunteer Coordinator (VC), Social Worker (SW), and Chaplain Teams, ensuring that hospice services are delivered in a manner that aligns with Compassus' guidelines, policies, and the needs of patients and families. The DCS will also collaborate with hospice managers, business offices, physicians, and external agencies. Additionally, the DCS may serve as the alternate or acting Administrator with back up Nursing Support in the absence of the Hospice Area Executive of Clinical Operations.


Position Specific Responsibilities

  • • Leadership & Supervision:
    • Supervise up to 20 team members, including the Bereavement Coordinator (BC), Volunteer Coordinator (VC), Social Worker (SW), and Chaplain.
    • Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, performance evaluations, and if necessary, terminating staff (with administrative approval).
    • Guide the team by planning, assigning, and directing work, ensuring that work is completed efficiently, addressing complaints, and resolving conflicts.


    • Compliance & Regulations:
    • Ensure compliance with Hospice Conditions of Participation for Medicare, accreditation standards, and relevant state and federal regulations.
    • Oversee consultative processes between the Medical Director and BC, VC, SW, and Chaplain, ensuring appropriate care orders and interventions are executed for patient needs, especially when attending physicians are unavailable.
    • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of state regulations governing the supervision of BC, VC, SW, and Chaplain services.



    • Interdisciplinary Team Collaboration:
    • Lead and participate in meetings with the Bereavement Coordinator (BC), Volunteer Coordinator (VC), Social Worker (SW), and Chaplain, ensuring that patient care needs are thoroughly discussed and addressed.
    • Facilitate required documentation of patient-centered plans of care for non-nursing support services, including any changes in care levels, family support, and other essential interventions.
    • Ensure the completion of patient plans of care for non-nursing support services, are completed and updated in a timely manner.


    • Operational Management:
    • Oversee the 24/7 availability of hospice services, ensuring adequate staffing and resources.
    • Manage scheduling, productivity, performance reviews, team support, and other operational aspects for BC, VC, SW, and Chaplain teams.
    • Ensure efficient utilization of resources, including managing program mileage and labor to meet budget expectations.


    • Quality Assurance & Improvement:
    • Lead and contribute to Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities, ensuring continuous improvements in service delivery.
    • Analyze and report on clinical quality metrics, including Hospice Item Set, Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems CAHPS, and symptom management outcomes.
    • Implement departmental goals that align with organizational objectives, ensuring high standards in patient care delivery.


    • Patient Care Management:
    • Supervise the care of hospice patients per the established plan of care for support team services, ensuring appropriate continuity, service, and quality
    • Engage in patient care when needed, including conducting routine and discharge support visits, as required by licensing standards.
    • Participate in after-hours non-nursing shifts as necessary to support patient care needs.


    • Communication & Collaboration:
    • Foster open, effective communication within the clinical team and across all departments, including medical records, business office, intake, and leadership.
    • Act as a liaison between patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated care and resolution of concerns.
