Job Description

The Commissioned School Security Officer (CSSO) ensures a safe, secure, and supportive learning environment. Working under the guidance of the school’s leadership and the Arkansas State Police (ASP), the CSSO is an armed and trained professional responsible for monitoring campus security, responding to incidents, and fostering a safety culture. This position is authorized under Act 393 of 2015 and follows Arkansas State Police (ASP) licensing standards for Commissioned School Security Officers. CSSOs complement school resource officers (SROs) where SROs may not be available full-time or district-wide.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

License: Valid Commissioned School Security Officer (CSSO) license issued by the Arkansas State Police required.

Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in law enforcement, military, or school security.

  • Must be at least 21 and pass a psychological evaluation, background check, fingerprinting, and drug screening.

  • Complete the 60-hour ASP CSSO required training in active shooter response, weapons handling and retention, medical response, and scenario-based drills.

  • Completion of 24 hours of annual continuing education in school security topics.

  • Strong understanding of school safety procedures, emergency response, and applicable Arkansas laws.

  • Ability to perform duties requiring extended periods of standing, walking, and occasional physical intervention. 

  • Must be able and prepared to respond swiftly to emergencies under varying conditions and circumstances.

  • Prior training in trauma-informed practices, Youth Mental Health First Aid, or behavioral de-escalation.

  • Familiarity with school environments or experience working with children and adolescents. 

Additional Information

School Resource Officer wages will be based on individual experience and within the SY 2025-26 Salary Schedule.
