JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Steady Thermal Aero Research Turbine (START) Lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University seeks to hire a qualified Research Engineer to assist in all aspects of the daily operations of a complex research facility. The focus areas for START are on increasing turbine efficiencies through improved turbine airfoil cooling, improved seals between rotating and stationary parts, and through the use and testing of additive manufactured components.
Through strong support from Penn State, a major gas turbine manufacturer, and federal government agencies, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University created a unique facility that houses two 1,500 horsepower compressors and numerous other complex systems required for turbine testing. In addition, over the next three years, the START Lab is embarking on a major facility upgrade to include a second test turbine, known as START+.
Duties for this position include:
Managing industry and federal multi-year projects, including facility upgrades.
Interacting with both sponsors and vendors as to the status of the projects.
Procuring supplies and equipment.
Managing outsourcing of both labor and equipment.
Preparing detailed budget and schedule information.
Providing support with regards to the fabrication of research hardware and maintenance of measurement equipment, which requires the ability to work in a diverse environment with students and research sponsors through strong teamwork.
Requirements and Qualifications:
This position will be filled at the Advanced Professional or Senior Professional level, depending on the successful candidate's experience and education. The Advanced Professional level requires a bachelor's degree in an engineering or science discipline and 3 years of relevant experience. Additional experience is required for a higher level position.
Required skills include excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as project management tools.
