SUMMARY

The Pilot Third Class Medical Research Subject supports the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI), Aerospace Medical Research Division, Environmental Physiology Division (AAM-631).   The research subjects will act as (airplane) passengers at pressure-altitudes between ground level (Oklahoma City: 0.98 atm; 14.1 psi) and 45,000 feet (0.143 atm, 2.10 psi), complete pre- and post-trial measurements and questionnaires, provide blood samples for analysis, and be instrumented with various sensors.  Pilot 3rd Class Medical Research Subjects will spend approximately 6 hours in a hypobaric (i.e., altitude) chamber during the research experiment.  This project Supports the Optimized Flow Oxygen System research project study comprised of a series of on-site experimental sessions. This position is On-Call with day shift hours.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Current third-class medical certificate or higher.

Must have a valid State/Federal ID with picture.
Must be at least 18 and no more than 50 years of age.

Must be able to speak fluent English.

Energetic and possess stamina to wear oxygen masks that may promote a level of discomfort when worn for several hours.

Physically able to participate in a simulated altitude decompression event while remaining calm and under self-control without endangering themselves or others.

BMI < 40 according to initial weight and height

Must have hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (HCT) values of > 12.0 g/dL and > 37% respectively on day of altitude chamber flight as determined by pre-flight CAMI blood draw

Must be a non-smoker and a non-vaper.

Must not have any of the following medical situations.

  • Any medical/clinical respiratory condition (e.g., asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD], etc.).

  • Any cold, acute upper respiratory infection (URI), or respiratory issue within two (2) weeks prior to study participation.

  • Any neuromuscular disease, neuropathy, peripheral vascular disease, hypertension, or Raynaud’s Phenomenon/Syndrome.

  • Any medical conditions or physical limitations that would preclude them from a 15-minute bout of vigorous

exercise or to experience an altitude decompressive event.

  • Have history of corrective eye surgery or detached retina.

Disqualifying medical/physical conditions to include respiratory ailments such as asthma or emphysema; pregnancy; hypo/hypertension; diagnosed heart problems; chest pains, difficulty breathing; serious bodily disability, deformity, or dismemberment; spells of severe dizziness; diabetes requiring medication; claustrophobia; recent surgery; or any other chronic disease.

Must not report to customer facility with:

Painted fingernails (including clear coat)

Any coloration on fingers (magic marker or pen ink/tattoos)

Any facial hair including beards or mustaches

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Attends hypobaric research event(s) from start to finish.

Will have anthropomorphic measurements taken prior to each event, onsite at study location, and must have a BMI < 40 according to weight and height on the study day.

To minimize the risk of altitude decompression sickness (DCS), Completes a pre-flight, pure oxygen breathing protocol with vigorous exercise requiring a marathon-level effort (75% maximal oxygen consumption [VO2 max] on an exercise bike using both arms and legs for approximately 15 minutes).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a minimum of (1) one year relevant experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education/experience.

Able to understand and follow directions presented in written and spoken English language.

Be physically able to participate in a rapid simulated egress from an aircraft without endangering themselves or others.
