Job Description:

If so, you should consider a career as a Discovery Examiner with the Nebraska Department of Revenue. Positions in this dynamic and exciting field are on the front lines of tax administration and education. Discovery examiners conduct on-site and in-office reviews of taxpayer documentation to ensure compliance with existing laws and regulations. After review, they compile work papers to help assist the taxpayer in voluntarily report any existing liabilities to the State. They provide taxpayers education specific to their business to ensure future compliance.

Job duties include:
1. Conduct on-site and/or in-office reviews to ensure compliance.
2. Prepares workpapers or spreadsheets to document work.
3. Contacts taxpayers to request records of information or to explain process and requirements.
4. Respond to taxpayer requests for information and explanations.
5. Document relevant facts, information, results, and recommendation through reports and data bases.
6. Discuss findings with Revenue professionals to resolve issues or make recommendations.
Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: Post high school education or training in bookkeeping, accounting, or mathematics and at least two years of related experience; OR Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in accounting.
Preferred Qualifications: Post high school education or training in bookkeeping, accounting, or mathematics and at least two years of related experience; OR Associate's degree in Finance or Accounting. At least six hours in accounting. Work experience in federal or state taxation.
Other: Valid driver’s license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
The successful candidate will have:
- Knowledge of financial and accounting records and principles
- Intermediate working knowledge of Word and Excel
- Math skills
- Communication skills
- Analytical abilities
- Research abilities
- Ability for limited travel, including extended hours
