We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Lead Occupational Health & Safety Specialist to take charge of Arriva Rail London’s Health and Safety operations, driving strategy, compliance, and team development. In this pivotal role, you will oversee all Occupational Health & Safety functions, ensuring that our organisation meets the highest safety standards and legal requirements.
Reporting directly to the Head of Safety & Wellbeing, this is a fantastic opportunity for a proven safety professional who ideally has a background in Railway Occupational Safety, who is ready to embark on a new challenge with one of the country’s leading train operators!
What you’ll be doing:
You will lead and inspire the Occupational Health & Safety team, ensuring smooth operations, strategic development and ongoing performance.
The Lead Occupational Health & Safety Specialist will be responsible for implementing comprehensive health & safety management systems in line with legislation and regulatory standards.
You will oversee the Occupational Health & Safety budget, ensuring compliance with all financial safety goals.
Directing daily operations will be another key part of this role, ensuring that all occupational health and safety activities meet legal requirements and effectively manage risk, whilst also managing risk assessment audits and incident investigations ensuring that timely corrective action plans are in place.
You will also be responsible for evaluating current policies and procedures, identifying areas for improvement and implementing any required changes.
The Lead Occupational Health & Safety Specialist will also be responsible for recruiting, training and developing team members always fostering a culture of continuous improvement and high performance, whilst also delegating responsibilities and supervising progress to ensure accountability across the team.
You will also be required to develop and implement Occupational Health and Safety strategies to achieve organisational objectives, including presentations and proposals whilst maintaining accurate records, managing expenses within budget and upholding all organisational policies and procedures.
Building and maintaining strong and effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders will be another key part of this role, to ensure customer satisfaction and compliance.
What we need from you:
This individual will need to have had at least 10 years’ experience working within a safety role and will also need to have 5 years’ experience working at a senior level, managing teams.
You will need strong knowledge of Health & Safety law and will ideally be educated to a Diploma level or equivalent, or currently in pursuit of this.
Strong understanding of quality and environmental management systems is essential for this position, as well as strong IT skills including Microsoft Office.
Any experience working in a railway operational safety position with knowledge of standards and codes of practice would be highly advantageous.
You will need to have the ability to work methodically with strong attention to detail and experience of working to and meeting tight deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, with proven experience in managing stakeholder relationships.
You will need to have the ability to work well in a team, whilst prioritising tasks effectively and should be able to adapt to flexible working environments.
