Requirements

The Police Sergeant serves as Watch Commander during his or her tour of duty and supervises subordinates assigned to provide safety and security to the Georgetown University Main Campus and Medical Center. They ensure compliance with appropriate written and verbal orders of the Chief of GUPD and other designated supervisors (including the Deputy Chief and Lieutenants) for all security, police, safety and traffic matters occurring on and around Georgetown University property. Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Direct the work activities of subordinate employees assigned to them.

  • Consult with other designated immediate supervisor(s) on appropriate decisions.

  • Serve as the initial Incident Commander on-scene during incidents and emergencies until relieved by superior.

  • Authorize and send emergency notifications to the University Community during critical events in the absence of an on-scene superior.

  • Investigate crimes and incidents as they come under their purview.

  • Engage in community policing and crime prevention activities. 

  • Work on assigned special assignments including, but not limited to Investigations or Crime Prevention Program.

Work Interactions

This position reports directly to the Lieutenant. This person works independently with a limited amount of direct supervision. The incumbent may work with up to 9 other Sergeants on the Main Campus and is a frontline supervisor for up to approximately 2 investigators, 9 police officers, 3 communications staff, 5 security officers, student guards, and contract security officers. This position is considered as essential under the University Personnel policy guidelines and therefore is subject to be on call when necessary. Must be willing to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department. This may include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to departmental needs.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in criminal justice or related field

  • Minimum of five (5) years law enforcement experience related to public safety, including at least 1 year of supervisory experience

  • Previous experience in and responsibility for critical incident response and notification procedures desired

  • Previous experience and/or training in situations involving sexual assault and discrimination (including religious, racial, and sexual orientation) a plus; An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered in lieu of the above requirements

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and at least 21 years of age

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with no violations in the last three years and able to pass Georgetown University driver’s certification

  • All applicants are subject to a written test, a report writing test, drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to university specifications, and extensive psychological testing

  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation and also qualify for a Special Police Officer’s Commission

  • Must be comfortable using computers including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email and/or the ability to learn these applications is essential

  • Knowledge of telecommunications equipment is desirable, with administrative and clerical skills being a plus

  • Must possess intermediate knowledge of criminal and civil law and of police practices and procedures

  • Must possess tact, patience, a courteous demeanor and pleasant personality in order to deal with students, staff, faculty, visitors, and community members

  • Must respect the use of police powers in relation to a university environment

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including report writing, are essential
