Overview

Utah State University invites applications for a Business Manager I to support the financial operations of key student-facing units, including the Division of Student Affairs, Student Success Initiatives, and Strategic Enrollment Management. This position plays a crucial role in advancing the university's mission to support students throughout their journey—from enrollment to graduation—through excellent fiscal stewardship and operational leadership.

 

The Business Manager I manages and coordinates the business operations of departments that provide critical student support services. This includes oversight of budget development and management, financial reporting, personnel processes, contracts and grants, and other administrative functions. The role requires proactive problem-solving, strong collaboration skills, and a commitment to helping students succeed by supporting the staff and leadership of these dynamic divisions.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a business resource and consultant to leaders across Student Affairs, Student Success, and Enrollment Management.
  • Manage daily business transactions including procurement card processes, financial systems (e.g., Banner), travel, and HR workflows.
  • Support the development and reconciliation of budgets and provide fiscal oversight to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
  • Coordinate with sponsored programs and grants administration on proposals and ensure compliance with University and sponsor policies.
  • Lead or contribute to payroll processing, EPAF creation, and data management.
  • Train, guide, and mentor business services team members to support their growth and the unit’s success.
  • Implement and maintain effective financial and management systems.
  • Collaborate across colleges and departments to ensure consistency and accuracy in financial processes.
  • Handle tuition awards, scholarships, and graduate assistantship funding administration.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a business field or an equivalent combination of education plus experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working within higher education institutions, preferably with divisions focused on Student Affairs, Student Success, and Strategic Enrollment Management.
  • Proficiency in university business systems such as Banner, ServiceNow, and AggieTime.
  • Knowledge of university financial policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with sponsored programs, contracts, and grants administration.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative, fast-paced, and student-centered environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of finance enterprise systems and software.
  • Computer skills, including Excel and Windows.
  • Knowledge of management reporting systems.
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control procedures.
  • Knowledge of procedures used in the financial field.
  • Ability to train and lead staff.
  • Problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Knowledge of contracting processes and associated local, state, federal, and other regulations.
  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Skilled in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and/or projections.
