SAFETY SPECIALIST
Where will you work: Onsite at Carlsbad, NM (1361 Potash Mines Road - Carlsbad, NM 88220)
The Safety Specialist (I, II, III and Sr.) will provide daily support of safety and occupational health programs, assuring effective management of H&S risks and compliance with applicable federal and local H&S regulations and company policies at our Carlsbad facility. A qualified Senior Safety Specialist is highly desired but candidates with lesser experience will be considered.
What you’ll do?
- Interact with workers in the field, discussing the work that is being completed.
- Perform inspections, observations, and assessments to identify and mitigate risks.
- Serve as a subject matter expert and point of contact for employee questions regarding workplace conditions and compliance with regulatory safety requirements, Mosaic's safety rules and the Mosaic Management System (MMS).
- Ensure unsafe acts, conditions or non-compliance issues are addressed.
- Keep Management and Supervision aware of problem areas and develop action plans to address issues.
- Contribute to incident investigations by gathering evidence and associated documentation.
- Plan and coordinate investigations and facilitate them once fully trained to do so.
- Follow-up on action items resulting from investigations and ensure proper documentation of corrective actions.
- Contribute to safety reviews through the Management of Change Process to ensure proper risk management.
- Prepare materials for learning lessons, safety shares, etc.
- Ensure communication of these materials through shift start documents and presentation during crew safety meetings.
- Ensure lessons learned are shared with other sites.
- Review and develop site documents such as safety plans for specific jobs, site level safety procedures and Safe Work Instructions.
- Coordinate site preparations for regulatory inspections and lead field tours with regulators.
- Gather information and prepare responses to regulatory questions for review by senior H&S leaders.
- Partner with operations and H&S leadership to develop action items to resolve regulatory concerns.
- Prepare requisitions and maintain safety equipment and supplies.
- Develop, coordinate, and/or deliver targeted and effective task-specific H&S risk and compliance-based training to all site employees and contractors (as appropriate). Oversee and facilitate (new) employee and contractor safety orientations. Assist in the facility's implementation of Mosaic's EHSMS activities.
- Take responsibility of safety efforts and oversight in absence of safety leader as needed. Role serves as a mentor to hourly HSS Coordinators. Provide guidance on safety processes and serve as resource on questions and safety procedures and techniques.
What you’ll need:
Safety Specialist I
- High school diploma or GED required with 3 years of related experience as a safety professional in an industrial/mining environment OR bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety or equivalent.
- Experience as an RCA facilitator is a plus.
- CSP or CMSP is highly valued.
- Working knowledge of safety and occupational health regulations required.
Safety Specialist II
- High school diploma or GED required with 5 years of related experience as a safety professional in an industrial/mining environment OR bachelor’s degree with 1 year of related experience.
- Experience as an RCA facilitator is a plus.
- CSP or CMSP is highly valued.
- Working knowledge of safety and occupational health regulations required.
Safety Specialist III
- Bachelor's degree in related field with at least 3 years of relevant experience OR high school diploma with at least 7 years relevant experience.
- Advanced knowledge of applicable safety regulatory framework in the area of work (OH&S, MSHA regulations).
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP) is highly valued.
