Job Description
Position Overview
As a Manager, Thermal Electrical Engineering, you will lead and develop a team of engineers responsible for the electrical engineering, procurement support, and construction/commissioning support of cutting-edge Thermal generation projects (natural gas combustion turbines, combined cycle power plants, and related facilities). You will be primarily responsible for managing internal engineering resources and overseeing selected Engineering Firms to complete final detailed design packages for projects to be built. The electrical systems of these projects typically include large turbine generators, isophase bus duct, medium voltage and low voltage auxiliary systems (switchgear, breakers, MCCs), generator step-up transformers (GSUs), switchyard equipment, and high/extra-high voltage transmission interconnections to the grid.
Responsibilities:
Electrical Engineering Management Responsibilities
Manage up to 2 or 3 engineers; provide day-to-day technical guidance on issues encountered during engineering design, construction, commissioning, and placed-in-service activities.
Conduct regular meetings with the assigned team, supervise project assignments and priorities, and perform performance reviews and coaching for team members.
Responsible for achieving assigned goals for the team and department, including quality, schedule, and cost objectives for electrical deliverables.
Support upper management with strategic planning, resource planning, and defining goals for the Thermal Electrical Engineering team.
Develop and maintain standard designs, processes, and procedures for Thermal Electrical Engineering (e.g., BOP standards, switchyard and MV/LV auxiliary design templates).
Implement industry best practices and incorporate project lessons learned across the team to continuously improve quality and execution.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry technology through training, conferences, and engagement with OEMs and EPC partners.
Electrical Engineering and Projects’ Technical Responsibility
Assist in developing project-specific construction, engineering, and equipment specifications for thermal generation electrical systems (turbine-generator, isophase bus, MV/LV auxiliaries, protective relaying, station service, and switchyard).
Assist in the development of new projects by analyzing conceptual designs that comply with all critical owner and interconnection requirements and support RFQ specifications.
Review conceptual project designs and validate compliance with applicable owner standards, utility interconnection requirements, and codes/standards.
Prepare and validate electrical load lists and energy calculations (auxiliary power, station service, cable sizing, losses, and related studies inputs).
Conduct thorough design reviews of electrical deliverables (drawings, technical specifications, and studies) including Balance of Plant, switchyard, and transmission line interconnection.
Define the scope of all required electrical system studies (e.g., short circuit, arc flash, protection coordination, grounding, harmonic, and dynamic studies as applicable) and review results for accuracy and compliance.
Track design schedules, update stakeholders, and ensure critical electrical engineering milestones and deadlines are met.
Coordinate with operations engineering to incorporate lessons learned into new design reviews and specifications to continuously improve quality.
Coordinate information and resolve technical interfaces between equipment suppliers, EPC/construction contractors, utilities, and the Engineer of Record.
Support project close-out by organizing and transferring all as-built documentation to the final project owner including electrical drawings, schematics, bill of materials, electrical studies, and relay settings.
