SUMMARY: The Senior Power Systems Engineer (PE) serves as a technical leader for power system design, utility interconnection, protection systems, and distributed energy resources (DER) supporting commercial solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), EV charging, microgrid, and resiliency projects. This role provides engineering expertise throughout project development, design, construction, commissioning, and operations while ensuring safe, reliable, and code-compliant electrical infrastructure solutions. The position may serve as the Electrical Engineer of Record (EEOR) for applicable projects and provide engineering review and sealing of engineering documents where required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Serve as a subject matter expert for power systems engineering, utility interconnection, and DER integration.
• Perform and review power system analyses including short-circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, load flow, and power quality studies.
• Lead technical coordination and utility interconnection efforts with investor-owned and municipal utilities.
• Design, specify, review, and support protective relay systems and non-export control schemes associated with solar PV, battery energy storage, and distributed energy resource projects.
• Develop and review relay protection philosophies, control schematics, relay settings documentation, and commissioning requirements utilizing platforms such as SEL, Basler, and similar protection and control equipment.
• Support relay testing, controls verification, export control validation, and utility witness testing activities.
• Serve as the Electrical Engineer of Record (EEOR) when required and provide engineering review, approval, and sealing of engineering documents in accordance with applicable regulations and project requirements.
• Evaluate electrical infrastructure, utility service information, equipment ratings, protection schemes, and interconnection requirements to support project development and utility compliance.
• Support the design and integration of solar PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS), EV charging infrastructure, microgrids, and resiliency solutions.
• Review engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, constructability, and code compliance.
• Develop technical recommendations related to electrical distribution systems, utility requirements, and grid integration strategies.
• Support project teams during design, construction, commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting activities.
• Provide technical guidance to Engineering, Estimating, Operations, Construction, and Project Management teams.
• Assist with utility, AHJ, and field engineering issue resolution.
• Support the development and maintenance of engineering standards, best practices, and design methodologies.
• Maintain regular in-person collaboration with project teams and stakeholders to support successful project execution.
EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION:
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
• Minimum 8 years of experience in power systems engineering, renewable energy, utility interconnection, or electrical infrastructure design.
• Strong knowledge of NEC, IEEE standards, power system protection, electrical system analysis, and distributed energy resources.
• Experience supporting utility interconnection applications and electrical infrastructure upgrades.
• Experience with commercial solar PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS), EV charging infrastructure, or microgrid projects preferred.
• Experience with California utility interconnections and utility requirements preferred.
• Experience serving as Electrical Engineer of Record (EEOR), preparing and sealing engineering documents, or reviewing PE-sealed engineering packages preferred.
• Experience designing, configuring, commissioning, or troubleshooting protective relay systems and non-export control schemes utilizing SEL, Basler, or similar relay platforms preferred.
• Proficiency with power systems analysis software such as EasyPower, ETAP, SKM, CYME, or ASPEN OneLiner preferred.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and other engineering design tools preferred.
