MAJOR FUNCTION

Responsible for assisting curatorial staff in carrying out the History Center Collections Management and Research Procedures essential to the preservation of historical resources. The position assists with public access to collections and provides reference and research services including in-person, telephone, email, and written inquiries. 

 

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Provide a level of customer service to create courteous and positive interactions with staff, patrons, and visitors at the History Center
  • Welcome library patrons and inform them of research procedures, holdings, and floor plan
  • Assists Curator of Collections in managing and strategically expanding the digital collection of the history center
  • Assist external and internal patrons with research requests by providing access to books, periodicals, maps, microfilm, computer databases, and other resources
  • Actively collaborate with History Center’s curatorial team to perform archival and research work in the collection to expedite the development of programs
  • Provide printed and/or digital copies of documents as requested
  • Use reference tools to control and track use of materials in the library
  • Develops and performs specialized procedures and workflows in digital handling, data management, metadata creation, and storage
  • Maintain library resources and cataloging records, correctly re-shelving and re-filing holdings and assist in the ongoing inventory process
  • Responsible for the collection, documentation, and deposit of all revenue generated by the library
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
The employee is expected to perform or possess the following:

  • Ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with staff and the public
  • Ability to follow History Center’s policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of archival practices, procedures, methods, and techniques
  • Experience with digital archival standards; digital preservation tools, digital rights management tools; copyright and open access self-archiving tools; and archives administration tools for description and arrangement of processed materials
  • Knowledge of descriptive metadata specific to digital collections
  • Experience in identifying and sourcing a variety of authentic primary and secondary resources
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and specialized library equipment (such as microfilm readers) with proficiency in the use of electronic information storage systems; digital imaging and scanning technology
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office, email, internet databases, and to learn library-specific computer applications
  • Ability to classify, catalog, and prepare incoming materials
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; to bend and reach repetitively, squat, twist, kneel, and climb
  • Ability to alternate between standing and walking and sitting at a computer for long periods of time
  • Strong organizational skills and must be very detail oriented

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in library science or history
  • One (1) year relevant work experience in cataloging archival material thr
