JOB TITLE: PART-TIME CLASSROOM LAB ASSISTANT/READER/SCRIBE FOR DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES
DEPARTMENT: DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES
SALARY RANGE: $15.00-21.00 per hour
FLSA: NON-EXEMPT
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Disability Support Services
SCHEDULE DETAILS: Part-time (not to exceed 19.5 hours per week)
Position Summary
This position works under the direct supervision of the Director of Disability Support Services (DSS). The Part-time Classroom Lab Assistant/Reader/Scribe works with students in the classroom environment to facilitate the student’s access to course materials, lectures, and activities. This role collaborates with faculty, Accessibility Coordinators, the Administrative Assistant and the Director of Disability Support Services.
Essential Job Duties
- Classroom Lab Assistant: facilitate the physical aspects of laboratory or hands-on activities and tasks that the DSS student is not able to fully perform independently. Under the directive of the DSS student and following the instructor's guidance, carry out specific course related physical activities, taking care to not deviate from the directives given by the student. Prepare materials and equipment needed for lab or hands-on activity sessions. Assist in finding and utilizing supplementary materials that support the lab or hands-on objectives.
- Classroom reader: reads aloud instructions, prompts, content of class materials and/or project information that is not provided in an accessible format by reading words verbatim as provided by the course instructor.
- Testing reader: narrates the test material verbatim without defining, explaining or interpreting the content.
- Classroom scribe: takes lecture notes for students who may require assistance to capture key courses related content and/or responses as dictated by the student for in-class activities. Provides the student with an accurate and full account lecture content and ensures notes are clear and comprehensive. This may include written descriptions of visual information. Consistently attends lectures, as assigned, and provides electronic copies of notes per departmental process.
- Testing scribe: writes or types exactly as student dictates. Student dictates spelling and grammar including punctuation when grammar and spelling are being assessed.
- Demonstrate alignment with OTC Cares (student-centered, holistic, proactive, and data informed) and utilize that framework in day-to-day and long-term decision-making.
- Respond to concerns and unpredictable situations in a professional and calm manner.
- Exhibit exemplary attendance and punctuality.
- Comply with college policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including attending college functions.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Exceptional listening and recitation abilities.
- Exhibit attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions. Proficient in operating laboratory equipment under the direction of the DSS student. Understanding of the relevant subject matter is ideal.
- Demonstrate calmness and patience in all interactions. Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Adept in organizing, prioritizing, and working independently on assignments.
- Competency in operating PC, navigating email, Learning Management System (Canvas), and using document software, such as Microsoft 365.
- Experience working in an academic setting or working with individuals with disabilities.
- Ability to work a flexible, varied schedule based on student needs.
Preferred Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- An associate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning or equivalent experience.
- Two years of experience in customer service and/or administrative support.
- Two years of experience working in an academic setting or working with individuals with disabilities.
- Competency in assistive technology and software.
