Postdoctoral Fellow- Environmental Modeling and Political Economy
Tulane UniversityAbout the role
The project integrates environmental modeling, data sciences, health science, and political economy to examine how global price fluctuations influence artisanal and small-scale gold mining, mercury emissions, and socio-economic outcomes. The research will combine machine learning, Earth system modeling, and socio-economic analysis to quantify the environmental and economic analysis to quantify the environmental and economic impacts of mercury pollution and evaluate policy strategies to reduce emissions and improve community well-being
- Develop and apply data-driven and machine learning models to quantify relationships betwen ASGM mercury emissions and socio-economic drivers such as gold prices, employment, and poverty indicators
- Contribute to Earth system modeling of mercury transport, deposition, and environmental redistribution, linking emissions to human exposure pathways.
- Integrate environmental, epidemological, and economic datasets to quantify health and economic impacts of mercury exposure
- Evaluate policy interventions and edevelopment strategies aimed at reducing mercury emissions and breaking poverty traps in mining communities
- lead and contribute to peer-reviewed publicationos and conference presentations
- Participate in the intelletural community of the Murphy Institute by attending seminars, workshiops, and interdisciplinary events.
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D in Earth and Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Atmospheric Science, Economics, Public Policy, Data Science, or related discipline
- Experience with quantitative modleing, data analysis, or machine learning
- Strong programming skills ( e.g. FORTRAN, Python, R, MATLAB, or similar)
- Demonstratred ability to conducut independent research and publish scholarly work
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Earth system models, atmospheric, or environmental transport modeling, or integrated assessment modeling
- Familiarity with environmental health or socio-economic data analysis
- Interest in interdisciplinaty research linking enivronmental science and public policy
