Job Summary
This position can be based out of Washington DC or Philadelphia, PA.
Provide counsel to management regarding the Corporation’s legal rights and obligations with respect to federal, state and local laws and regulations concerning personnel management and employee and labor relations. Represent the Corporation in matters that potentially or actually require participation in proceedings before courts, administrative agencies, and arbitrators.
Essential Functions
- Counsel senior management and Human Resources professionals providing practical, business-oriented guidance to help the Company make informed decisions and comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, including EEO, wage and hour, leave, disability accommodation, labor relations, military leave, employee benefits, and immigration laws.
- Manage the Corporation's labor and employment litigation portfolio, including matters before federal and state courts, administrative agencies, and arbitration tribunals. Develop case strategy, assess legal and business risks, oversee internal litigation-related activities, and supervise outside counsel responsible for handling and trying cases. Representative matters include discrimination and harassment claims, accommodation and accessibility cases, pay equity claims, family and medical leave claims, Railway Labor Act disputes, and business immigration matters.
- Serve as a trusted legal partner to Benefits and Total Rewards stakeholders by advising on the design, administration, and compliance of employee benefit programs and related employment law considerations.
- Leverage prior exposure to employee benefits and ERISA matters to assess legal risk, oversee external legal advisors, and translate complex legal requirements into practical guidance for business clients.
- Develop and conduct training for management employees, on topics such as FMLA, ADA or EEO responsibilities, to ensure compliance with all such laws and regulations.
- Supervise or conduct internal investigations and provide advice on ethics compliance within a corporate environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor Degree
- License to practice law in any state and the ability to waive into the District of Columbia Bar.
- Plus 8 years of relevant work experience.
Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to manage and direct a caseload of 25-50 matters of varying types and complexity.
- Experience in managing employment and/or labor proceedings before federal and state courts, administrative agencies, and arbitration tribunals.

Capability to advise the most senior levels of management on the full range of employment and/or labor laws.

Familiarity with employee benefits laws and regulations, including ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, ACA, and related compliance considerations.

Competence to provide internal training on employment and/or labor laws.

Superior analytical and communication skills.

Ability to quickly learn the fundamentals of different areas of the law.
