Comcast NBCUniversal has announced its intent to create a new publicly traded company ('Versant') comprised of most of NBCUniversal's cable television networks, including USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, SYFY and Golf Channel along with complementary digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow, GolfPass, and SportsEngine. The well-capitalized company will have significant scale as a pure-play set of assets anchored by leading news, sports and entertainment content. The spin-off is expected to be completed during 2025.

Job Description

NBC News Digital is hiring an experienced editor to work with our reporters on rapid enterprise reporting, impactful investigative projects, ambitious accountability stories and must-read features that capture national attention. 

This editor should have a proven record of success in conceiving, producing and editing well-written, high-impact work on a variety of topics and at a variety of speeds, including in the competitive environment of a major breaking news event. The editor should have demonstrated experience in coordinating all aspects of digital projects, including multimedia elements, data visualizations and cross-platform promotion. Experience running data-driven investigations and working across large teams is a plus.  

The editor will work with our Managing Editor, Enterprise, to manage a team of reporters producing groundbreaking original stories on significant newsmakers, the biggest news stories of the moment and the major storylines of the year. The editor should be full of ideas on how to uncover important and revelatory information and should demonstrate persistence and creativity in guiding reporters to turn fascinating, unmissable pieces.  

In short, there are two areas of editorial focus: 

  • Rapid investigations into the biggest stories of the news cycle 
  • Deep, enterprising work into big and meaningful subjects 

This editor will work with reporters on the Enterprise team on stories ranging from public records scoops to multipart investigative series. The journalism this editor oversees could include, for example, an exposé of the harm caused by a wealthy CEO’s company, an examination of government failures in the days after a disaster, or a piece on the first interview with a key voice at the center of a high-interest storyline.  

This role can be based in New York, Washington, D.C., or Los Angeles with a hybrid work schedule.  

Job duties: 

  • Work with the Managing Editor, Enterprise, to develop rigorously reported, compelling stories that are creatively told across all digital platforms and lead a team of reporters producing these stories. 
  • Respond rapidly to breaking news and drive distinctive coverage by editing several quick-turn enterprise stories a week, including scoops and features.  
  • Edit some major projects every year, with a focus on significant companies, institutions and public figures and reporting that has an impact.  
  • Manage reporters on the Enterprise team, working with them to produce journalism that sets us apart. This includes guiding the reporters in developing ideas, coaching them on reporting and writing, and editing their stories. 
  • Work with a range of journalistic talent from both digital and TV, including digital staff members who want to elevate their game into long-form work, television reporters and producers, and freelancers.
