Position Summary

The Surgery Medical Assistant contributes to the organization and daily function of the operating room in accordance with established federal, state and accreditation standards and facility policies and procedures. Assists the nurses and physicians in delivering the highest standard of patient care available. This position rotates between front and back office and will be trained to be proficient in all support roles.

Work Hours: 8 - 24 hours a week, 1 - 3 days per week

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Admit and discharge incoming surgical patients

  • Provide excellent customer service to all incoming patients

  • Maintain efficient and organized work areas.

  • Anticipate the need for equipment and supplies based on surgeon preference.

  • Select equipment and supplies in an organized, cost effective and timely manner..

  • Demonstrate skill in appropriate use of instruments and equipment.

  • Keep surgical suites clean, tidy, free of soiled equipment and supplies, and properly stocked.

  • Follow established policies and procedures for surgical counts.

  • Demonstrate ability to create and maintain a sterile field.

  • Uses principles of aseptic practice in varying situations.

  • Assist with inventory management.

  • Assist with OR turnover, and preparation of sterile supplies (e.g. opening, case pulling).

Experience Requirements

  • 2 years experience in a healthcare or medical business where you function as an assistant or technician role.

  • Proficiency with computer software, including electronic medical record (EMR or HER) systems required.

  • Proven experience working in a cohesive team environment

  • Proven ability to maintain excellent attendance and punctuality.

  • Proven ability to be flexible and quickly adapt to change.

  • Knowledge of sterile environment procedures preferred, but not required

Education Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to stay focused.
