The Role

We have an exciting opportunity within the Analysis Capability Group for a Senior Mechanical Analysis Engineer to deliver and lead on-going client projects supporting a number of design and development programmes.  The solutions proposed guide the clients’ product development and enable the interaction between different components / technologies to be understood, whilst maintaining performance and cost targets.

 

The successful candidate can expect to participate in a wide range of projects across many powertrain and vehicle types and market sectors as well as in the aerospace and defence area, energy sector and for industrial applications. The role involves providing mechanical analysis support to design and development projects using a range of analysis tools and classical calculations. The role will encompass all powertrain types, from conventional combustion engine through to hybrid and electric powertrains, transmissions and other mechanical systems.

 

A Senior Mechanical Analysis Engineer is required to carry out a range analytical tasks which include but are not limited to:

  • Dynamic and durability analysis to specify and optimise powertrain components e.g crankshaft, connecting rod
  • Kinematic and dynamic simulation of valvetrain and timing drive designs
  • Many non-standard analysis tasks to direct design recommendations or problem resolutions to the expectation of the client
  • Development of analysis methodologies in the above mentioned areas
  • Technical supervision of junior members of the team 

Key Responsibilities

Working in conjunction with engineers across Ricardo locations around the world, you will perform the following tasks:

  • To lead and produce high quality innovative mechanical analysis, using state-of-the-art multi-body dynamics analysis and hand calculations.
  • To work on engineering activities for engines/transmissions from prototype through to full series production on client projects.
  • Responsible for working closely with a design and development team to assess functionality and performance of the developed systems; discuss and agree on requirements and targets.
  • Interpretation of analysis results and suggestions for improvements.
  • Preparation of detailed technical presentations for both internal and client project engineering review.
  • Work to internal and client quality procedures and validation processes.
  • Support the development of future products and services; assisting in the development of new techniques.

 

Skills and Experience:

  • Graduate mechanical / automotive / aerospace engineers with experience of mechanical analysis.  

  • Have a proven track record of professional experience delivering mechanical analysis of engines and/or transmissions.
  • Minimum degree in an Engineering or Science related discipline (e.g. electrical and electronic engineering / mechanical engineering / physics / computer science / software engineering / maths / control engineering)
  • Excellent theoretical and analytical skills relating to dynamics and kinematics of mechanisms. Application experience in analysis of engine or reciprocating and rotating components using hand calculations, multi-body dynamics or FEA tools is beneficial.
  • Experience of ICE and transmission technology.
  • Experience with using office tools e.g. Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Able to work independently, setting task priorities to deliver the required project deliverables on time.
  • Strong teamwork, organizational, oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to communicate and make presentations with a high degree of clarity, having the ability to write and deliver technical presentations to both internal project teams and clients, at gateway and management reviews.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and attention to detail.
