About the role

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and Implement Safety Policies: Create and enforce comprehensive safety policies, procedures, and programs that align with industry best practices and local regulations.
  • Risk Assessment: Identify potential workplace hazards and conduct regular risk assessments. Develop strategies to minimize and mitigate risks.
  • Employee Training: Provide training and education to employees on safety protocols, emergency response procedures, and the proper use of safety equipment.
  • Incident Investigation: Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, and provide recommendations for corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety laws, regulations, and standards. Keep abreast of any changes in regulations and update company policies accordingly.
  • Safety Audits: Conduct regular safety audits and inspections of the workplace, equipment, and processes to identify areas for improvement.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Develop and maintain emergency response plans and coordinate drills to prepare employees for potential emergencies.
  • Safety Culture: Promote a culture of safety throughout the organization, encouraging employee involvement in safety initiatives.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of safety incidents, training, inspections, and safety equipment inventory.
  • Reporting: Prepare and submit regular reports to management and relevant authorities on safety performance and compliance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., Certified Safety Professional - CSP) preferred.
  • Proven experience in health and safety management, preferably in the scrap or recycling industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of local, state, and federal safety regulations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead and facilitate safety training sessions.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to safety excellence.
  • Knowledge of waste management and recycling processes is a plus.
  • Fluency in English. French and/or German is a strong asset.
