JOB TITLE: LIFEGUARD DEPARTMENT: YOUTH ACTIVITIES
REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR/YOUTH COORDINATOR II HOURS: 40 HRS/WK – TEMP POSITION
SALARY: $20.00 PER HOUR REQUISITION: 736
POSITION SUMMARY:
Ensure the safety of all individuals in and around the lake, dock, beachfront, and surrounding areas. Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging environment by monitoring water and beach activities in accordance with established safety policies, procedures, and best practices. Promote a culture of safety and attentiveness while supporting positive member experiences.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Lifeguards work directly with the Waterfront Lead and Waterfront Facilitators to ensure a safe environment for swimming and water activities at camp.
2. Lifeguards spend their days supervising swimmers and leading water activities.
3. Lifeguards also help and participate in various aspects of camp life..
4. The Lifeguards contribute to harmonious camp operations by exhibiting positive camper engagement.
5. Ensure work areas and activities are safe and meet the requirements.
6. Responsible for lifeguarding per American Red Cross Certification standards, American Camp Association standards and Safety Activity Checkpoints.
7. Maintain visual and auditory awareness of all participants in assigned waterfront areas.
8. Observe and assess camper behavior for appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques as needed.
9. Complete paperwork in a timely fashion, including Incident Reports.
10. Carry out assigned duties regarding camper health, safety, program area maintenance and cleanliness, and program goals.
11. Responsible for checking that the waterfront facilities, equipment, and supplies are clean and maintained in the best possible working order.
12. Must be physically able to perform necessary duties as assigned for the safety of all campers and guests.
13. Responding to emergencies including utilizing skills to administer First Aid/CPR when necessary.
14. Maintaining constant supervision and observation of program participants while assessing risk and participant safety.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities of camp staff members.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Education and/or Experience
High School diploma or equivalent and previous lifeguarding experience preferred. Previous experience working with children and youth, and experience as a strong swimmer required.
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write complex grants, reports, plans, speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to prepare detailed budgets and work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Licenses or Certificates
Valid Washington State driver’s license and proof of insurance required.
Must have a valid current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
Other Skills and Abilities
An exceptional swimmer, capable of navigating various water conditions quickly and efficiently to rescue swimmers in distress.
